All my characters feel the same

All my characters feel like a jack of trades and I don't feel I ever really emphasise with my character. but the problem is my Mage can quite easily start to get good with a sword, or be proficient at wearing armor.

What are you a Troll? Read what you typed here, lol

TES series has always been a jack of a all trades game. If you don't want it to be that way and want to play a pure mage, start off by not wearing armor or yielding a sword, hard concept huh?

I realize Skyrim is not for everyone but some of the arguments and examples given are grade school material

My point was in Morrowind and Oblivion it was far harder to switch from your current character class into those kind of new skills and professions. I would personally prefer more restrictions. That is my opinion I don't have a problem with it if you don't feel the same.

However I certainly don't appreciate being called a troll simply because you either don't like the discussion or feel it is infantile and beneath you in some way quite a few people have expressed similar views to mine but I do consider everything people have said and many of the reasons I don't neccessarily share have been equally valid and thought provoking.

I'd appreciate it if you don't like something to simply state that you don't agree and why because that would have been a far more sensible and tactful response to the one you adopted. Hard concept huh?

I cant believe someone actually replied to such an evident trolling attempt. A troller calling troll the OP is pretty much the aptheosis of trolling, replying is the apotheosis of.....

Anyway I agree with the OP. Despite you cant really get all the perks like in Oblivion, you can still achieve more or less everything, in this TES. And much worse is the way you easily reach top positions in every guild/group with pitiful efforts; damn, it took me like 2 hours to become the thieves guild master. I remember spending days, in Oblivion, following each quest step by step and swearing like a docker because of my poor sneaking skills. Grey Fox, where are you!?.....*sigh*

My Thoughts:

1. Feeling Bland:I can understand the feeling of not exactly being connected to the world; sometimes it does feel a bit flat. I would like people to say, "hail Thane" in the streets of Whiterun or something. It's not like Dragon Age Origins to be sure or Mass Effect. But it is a HUGE improvement over Oblivion - the radiant system is definitely better about reacting to character decisions, and the literature in the game - the hundreds of books - really helps make the world feel rich and varied.

2. Customization: By far, the Perk System is A M A Z I N G, though of course, it could improved (lockpicking should be more like F3 and FNV requiring certain scores to even open the lock and yet again speechcraft feels forced; I wanted my barbarian to rough and rude, and he is a "smooth talker" b/c he trades all the time). That said, I feel that, more than the scores, Perks really helps customize your character as a fighter, thief, fighter/magic user, etc.

Also, love it or hate it, Bethy's "use it and it gets better," permits you eventually to score 100 in everything, which to me, is a bit cookie cutter and takes away from immersion. HOWEVER, I should point out, that on Master Difficulty, this is not so easy to do. Why? I'm 30th level, Mace and Shield all the way, with some healing magic and Alteration armor that's it, that's where are all my perks are - and I'm fighting 30th level beasties. On Adept Difficulty, they are so much cannon fodder. On Master, even the Falmer and their centipede pals are extremely dangerous to me, but doable, using my normal weapons. Once in a while, for experimentation, I will take out a bow or use destructive magic. No damage. Almost no damage at all against these creatures. I have 20 in both Archery and Destructive Magic and no perks, and on Master, it really shows. Try leveling up with that! I leave my bow at home, even with dragons, and let me tell you, it's not easy and forces me to role play luring the dragon to land, so I can TRY and beat it senseless. Master Diff level dragons are no joke; one ancient caused 300 points of damage through 400 points of armor in one attack.

Also, final note: I dk about Morrowind, but Oblivion was AWFUL with respect to class customization. I was basically a Thief/Agent that was head of the Mages Guild, the Thieves Guild, the Fighters Guild, etc. WHAT?! Seriously?

3. Morrowind: I once tried it for about an hour or two. In retrospect it sounds awesome, but I never really gave it a chance b/c between (a) the dated graphics (when I got it) (b) the combat system and © the fact enemies would not follow you out of the room, let you heal, you could come back and kill them, totally broke immersion for me. Oblivion really fixed #C in a big way, but it went a bit too far since the monster would chase you across Tamriel, though I fixed this perfectly with a mod that permitted real stealth play! It was excellent. Unfortunately, Skyrim repeats this problem.

4. Conclusion: There are so many reasons why this game is better than Oblivion, a few why it's worse, and some why it should be much better than it is. I want to love the game and I do, but I rated it a solid 8. I would even rate it an 8.5. I know Bethy tried really hard, and I don't design these things, maybe it's as good as it can get while appealing the mass audience. I am no fan of consoles, but I respect Bethy wanting a return for investment on their obvious very hard work, and HUGE POINTS for giving PCs the CK and the ability to mod the heck out of it to make the game we want. It's only been three weeks and there are already prolly 1,000 mods!! SERIOUSLY?!

However, as one reviewer put it, the genius of all Bethesda games is the open world itself. Combat, Plot, and even Rationality (like freshly lit candles in a tomb sealed for a 100 year? ha) were always handled a bit worse than every other game developer (Risen was the best combat ever; Gothic3 wasn't too bad either), and by the fifth game, I expect it all to be better than it was, but there is still "gaming magic" in them thar hills and after they patch resistance, I will spend ANOTHER 100 hours finding it all...

Well, that's where your imagination comes in handy. I have a set personality for a character when I create them. Not just by skills and class but by their morals, virtues, personality. Are they the kind to kill an innocent person just to get a really cool weapon from them? Do they walk around town in their undies? Do they join the brotherhood and kill people just to get that really cool horse Shadowmere? Do they steal from people, their enemies? Their neighbors? Do they drink? Do they like animals? Etc...

I could never see any two of my characters being the same in any game I play because I do this with every character I create. I get attached to my characters and will play the same character/s even in different games or continue them from one chapter to the next.

I think maybe you need to do more character development inside your own mind. Like a writer would when creating a character. I think then all your characters won't seem all the same to you. :woot:

QFT. My argonian thief/assassin has a completely different personality from my Breton warlock or my Nord soldier. The Breton is quite noble yet arrogant and headstrong, the nord is ruthless and short tempered but has her heart "in the right place" and the argonian is a sociopathic cannibal. Maybe we're just weird by giving our characters personalities? I still need character that uses heavy armour though... so I may make an Imperial knight...with daddy issues....

Sandbox games are like a big box of Lego. Some people can't make anything other than what the instructions say.

Perfect, just an absolutely perfect way to sum up this game as well as all ES games and games like minecraft and terraria. Some people just simply cannot enjoy a game where they are not being put on a specific path and told what to do along the way.

There's nothing wrong with that, its just a different style of game that some people don't enjoy. Personally I also give all my characters personalities before I create them and stick religiously to what I decided. Even if I see some omfgwtfbbq awesome weapon lying in someone's house, if I am a good virtuous character I will not steal it.

In short, the game is what you make out of it. Turn off the quest guide, actually read quest descriptions and listen to what npc's have to say, dont fast travel, just become immersed in the game and you will be rewarded for it.

1 thing that would make me love this game more would be a mod to include almsivi and divine intervention, I would love to be able to technically fast travel but by magic, that way it wouldn't feel so wrong just to completely break the realism and fast travel.
