RenownedWolfman
So i posted a mod yesterday, at the moment it just gets rid of blood, but later i hope to eliminate decapitation, change beverage names so they are non-alcoholic, and make undergarments more kid friendly, some people had a problem with this. What is your opinion on the mod. If you want to see the original comments the link is below. http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/484120-parent-convincing-mod/ and even more-so if people want to go into the implications of kids playing games like this go for it, a good friendly debate is something this forum needs right now. (not those flame wars we've been having) Edited December 3, 2011 by RenownedWolfman
McclaudEagle
I personally think the alcohol names and undergarment ideas seems a little too much. I really don't think a kid is going to care than something is called 'Mead', chances are, they won't even know what it is. As for undergarments, there's nothing really visible that would bother a kid either. Yes, there's a lot of skin showing, but a child only has to look at his arm and realize it's pretty much the same thing. That's just my opinion though, and as I'm not a parent, it may not be that valid.
mindinavoid
The matter regarding the undergarments is very broadly a society-based issue; if you did make it part of the mod, certainly it would be wise to make it optional. Many societies differ on the idea of what constitutes showing "too much skin". Changing the drink names is an interesting idea as well, as there are also numerous "wine" drinks and the like in the game. Rather than just disable decapitations, I'd suggest removing the chance for anyone to do the cinematic Kill Moves entirely, as some of those can be gruesome. (Jam a sword into a snow troll's face, lift a man off the ground with two swords in his gut, that sorta thing.) I'm not sure how you would get around the opening sequence with the other person being beheaded; maybe get someone to voice another "higher ranked" Imperial Guard who demands that the PC be taken aside for questioning (thus allowing the use of the "by your orders" line, and no modifications necessary to the existing NPC dialogue). You go into the tower, he talks to you for a moment, demands to know some things, Alduin shows up and makes a mess of things (behind the closed door), and Ulfric and company barge in (which knocks you to the floor, as you were in front of the door), take out the Imperial (offscreen-- just a "Yargh!" and a thump, maybe), and slam the door. Then one of them helps you up and the plot continues as normal, with the dead Imperial in a corner. Edited December 3, 2011 by mindinavoid
nandchan
Stop censoring the world. If your child is not old or mature enough to handle the adult world of Skyrim, don't give them a washed down version of the game. Give them a different game to play instead. Simple as that. take out the Imperial (offscreen-- just a "Yargh!" and a thump, maybe) What's next, changing swords to feathers and turning death into laughing fits? This is a game filled with violence. You can burn your enemies to toast, behead them with swords or crush their bones with a mace. To censor violence in a game filled to the brim with killings sounds ludicrous. And changing the name of wine? Sorry, what century is this? I thought for a moment we fell back into the Christian dark ages as far as open-mindedness goes. Why not retexture the models to look like brown paper bags, the kids will never know the difference! Concerning undergarments: They're fine as-is. There's nothing harmful about nudity (your kid is naked at least twice a day, best blind it instantly!), most concern is with sexuality, of which Skyrim has none of as far as I know - I haven't seen even a single hug or kiss, and the courtship process could be something cooked up by Disney. CampanaAliquanta
Some of the quest lines are a little dark, if you were worried about kids being exposed to themes involving rape and murder. I wouldn't worry about the wine. Anyone else here old enough to remember those cigarette candy sticks? :D
Matth85
Why should a kid play a game with; Dragons, killing stuff and set in a setting of Vikins? If you think "kids" can't play it, they shouldn't play it. If they can't take chopping of heads and blood, why should they play a barbaric/viking game where a war is waging? Isn't that like setting your kid to play GTA, but remove people dying. The gunshot is still fired at the person. The act is still seen, just not the effect. Heck, doesn't that make it worse? Learning them that stabbing a bandit 10 times will not make him bleed, he'll just fall asleep. No, I do not support. If they should not see blood, they should pplay games as Spyro the Dragon, Tetris, Pokemon and LEgend of Zelda. NOT TES, GTA or any other games like that. McclaudEagle
If your child is not old or mature enough to handle the adult world of Skyrim That's why RenownedWolfman wants to create the mod, to make it suitable for children. Why get another game if it's within your power to alter an existing one to how you want it to be?

Because the world is filled to the brim with adult themes, you simply can't make it child-friendly without removing the entire game. And at that point, it's not Skyrim - so just let them play Hello Kitty Online. Same thing, right?
Jinxxed0
If it's something you want to do, go for it. It's for you to decide. But as for my opinion. If someone is not old enough or ready to see blood or people in underwear, they're ready to play this game. why is it okay to slice and bash people but not see blood? I could go on an on about my opinion on violence and "too much skill" but its been said before. If you're making for your own kid or sibling or whatever, your efforts might be best placed in getting them a different game. Because even if you did do all these things, you have to go through every quest and get rid of the ones with sexual references and adult themes and go through all the books and get rid of items like human flesh and human heat. And then theres the dead animals hanging everywhere and the bloody goat heads found in some places. Then theres the piles of human bodies in certain places. I can guarantee you that if I was given enough time and certain models/textures, I could turn Skyrim from being a dark themed game into something more child friendly. Yes, it wouldn't be Skyrim, but it'd still have certain parts such as exploring and other stuff that would make it fun.
