Fallout NV Keeps Crashing During Loading. Unplayable

It is an issue with newer cards (9xx, 10xx) and Windows 10 anniversary update. Microsoft has made changes to the DIrectX ddk (driver development kit) which are breaking things. It has to do with the incorrect features of the card being reported and the game then selecting the wrong shader model, as well as something wrong with how the shaders are used in the driver itself. They also broke and limited the memory aperture size to 4GB for 32 bit games, which used to work fine with ENB making it larger.

The only way this issue will be fixed is if people stop trying to fix it with hacky methods and report the issue directly to NVIDIA and now also AMD which also have the problem in their latest driver updates.

acknowledged, looks like a marketing ploy, too many things coincides with developments between manufactures and MS.

makes you, forces you to think about products. I read the titan reviews, and all of a sudden, they nose dived in reviews for smaller versions of cards going faster and better. Currently..the big guys and the follow up driver support failures points really bad strategies.

And then you wonder why ? Windows 10 with it's Override updates which we can not stop. Lack of Hardware support for most major manufacturers, the supt Environments killing off CD readers. what used to work no longer does...out of the blue? stinks.

Those that can not afford things, keep older systems going loose out. Beef up the firewalls people. Keep what is yours ("yours".)

Popped in My w7 drive and said good by to windows 10. every thing works perfectly and back to business at hand.

Bottom line might be "who stands to gain from this? " not the consumer.

For advanced users: If you have a Windows 10 Education, Professional, or Enterprise edition you can use the included "Win10 Hyper-V system" and try running the game in a Win7 or 8.1 "virtual machine". See HyperV on Windows compatibility for the hardware requirements and a walk-through of the installation process. Note this requires you to have or obtain an ".iso" file of the desired OS install media. (If none of this option makes sense, you probably don't want to mess with it. Otherwise, educate yourself.) Surprisingly I have found that apps which choke about a hardware driver under the current but a newer OS version will often run just fine ON THE SAME HARDWARE with the same driver under a virtual machine with an older OS.

I was making an educated guess about the DDK, and NVIDIA later confirmed my suspicions and has cited the WDDK to have altered a specification which has not changed in at least a decade. It has broken other games too like Homefront. NVIDIA and AMD are passing the buck to Microsoft to make a shim to fix it, which I doubt they will because they never fixed direct draw issues with directx 9. They also never fixed the directx 10 bugs that broke Bioshock 2 and STALKER Clear Skies among other games.

I will never use Windows 10 for this reason, and they will continue to break stuff to favor their own newer platforms and to push their own AppStore and other models. I hope Valve puts more effort into SteamOS so we can ditch windows entirely at the end of the Windows 7/8 life cycles.
