What may a town/city need?

In a big city or a town that you are entering in a game, what do you want the town to have. I have got before some ideas about some wandering thieves at nights and all that is made, and I have also made some mysterious people walking around in the dark alleys at the nights. But is there anymore that could fit in a town. What do you think.

That was good TheUnforgiven, such a idea could lead to many quests. Can you make a little more speficisation if you like about the cult.

A cult that has rituals like, once a month for their god, vampire, lord, beast, whatever. And they randomly take a normal citizen(you dont want traders disappearing now do you? :P ) one day, then the next the are scarificed

And yeas if I should make a complex city with many different parts and such then there would be a more mystery when people dissapears. Because then if the town is in many part the people would say in latests rumors that there are dissapearing people in every part and the quests would be much longer. And the best of all that I likes in large citys is that the player can get lost in them just like the real large cities. And if i make a complex city with many alleys and much much more then will all the quests in the city be even harder to finish.

If you want to have HUGE city, you should keep in mind also such things:

 

there should be ordinary houses, some huts even, as well as few large manors. There should be rich and poor parts of the city.

Temples of various cult and some, so to say, illegal shrines ( like in Vivec).

Not a single tomb, but maybe huge dungeon used as a graveyard ( so, something a bit like huge, very huge tomb with many levels, some places sunken, some places demolished...

 

One thing I disliked in MOurnhold was it was in fact small city, with few citizens and manors just a bit bigger than ordinary houses, so to say.

 

a bazaar, some armorers... such things are also necessary.

 

ah! different housing styles, for example among huge Hlaalu one telvanni tower, of course secured by a high wall. And so on, and so on...

Yeah I know what you mean Hayabusa, the city should feel justlike an real city, that somethings happens. And a thing that just came up in my mind would be a great idea. How does it sound about a city that expands. I mean a city that have new buildings every month or something like that. So the first time you arrive to the city it is just a small town with about 7 buildings or something like that and the other time you travel to the city, about a month later you see that there are 4 building more and some new people has arrived to the city. And the month after that exactly the same thing but this time a house has burnt down and 4 new houses has been built. And even when you are in the town you can se how people are ariving from long travels by the road and goes to the Inn to rest. And there should even come handelers to the town and sell some food to the villagers and after that he leaves and comes back after two weeks or something like that. Would a idea like this be good or will it be bad?

Good idea with city getting bigger and bigger :) I think, there may be also, maybe, some changes of ownership,. like you have mr X`s hut, and when you`re back you realize mrx has moved out and now it belongs to mr Y. It may be a bit of work, but.. there`s no need to use much of it. It may be done so in case of just few houses.

 

 

another thing, there may be older and newer districts. Old, with maybe some houses abandoned, or, so to say:

let`s make one old , partially ruined /abandoned district, a regin of different rogues, maybe some cults as well. A good place for nobles to hide some of their secrets. DEEPLY.

 

On the other hand there should be some brand new, full of life districts.

 

 

other ideas, like movements of the people and other - they are VERY good, Almelexia.

 

 

BTW... I though, just one, weird idea: place one guy who`s mocking the streets. Named Dibbler, crying "sausages! Hot Sausages! " :) :) :)
