devinpatterson Posted January 6, 2012 Author Share Posted January 6, 2012 In our world, radiation on a long trip (say 6 months) to mars is a serious problem. The shielding is heavy and of course that means exponentially more fuel. Saw an article somewhere, where they were thinking of having a small area (just large enough to hold the crew) shielded as a safe zone. During times of high radiation, planet side communication would radio the crew and they would retreat to this area to wait out solar storms and other dangerous but temporary hot zones. I thought it might be interesting to use this in the mars mod. Space radiation is a unique mix of gamma-rays, high-energy protons and cosmic rays. The greatest threat to astronauts en route to Mars is galactic cosmic rays--or "GCRs" for short. These are particles accelerated to almost light speed by distant supernova explosions. Assume the last crew to head to the mars bases (before the war activities begin to cannibalize the mars rockets), were carrying vital supplies, but were exposed to lethal radiation on the trip. Initially communication is erratic and chaotic due to the GCR, with only parts of radio messages being received. Fragments of audio relate info about the unusual nature of the radiation (GCR's compared to fallouts typical nuclear radiation), rad-x and radaway's lack of effect vs it, a very rapid form of radiation poisoning with unusual side effects etc. Shortly after radio contact is lost between the rocket and mars/earth control. Assuming the crew dead and fearing the worse as the cargo necessary for their very survival is assumed lost, the colonists (or scientists) are overjoyed when the rocket arrives at mars base (under automatic pilot). The mars colonists rush in to provide immediate medical care and evacuation to medical facilities. They find the crew isn't dead, but they'r not really alive either..... I was thinking we could have this happen at approximately the same time the mars U.S. China conflict to add to teh chaos and as explanation for the rapid collapse of the colony/facilities. And as explanation why military security was essentially a skeleton crew (most military in conflict witht eh Chinese base). In addition it makes an interesting little horror story and will allow us to stock mission control with some unique feral ghouls (probably a variant of the glowing ones). They may have special attributes due to the nature of the radiation. Maybe something akin to a contagion like night of the living dead (wasn't it supposed to be something to do with radiation from a satellite or something.....easter egg?), resulting in most of the personal being infected instead of simply consumed. Since it's also a key point in teh questline for recovering your ride home and/or to phoebes it could provide a appropriate challenge if it's well stocked with glowing undead. revap Posted January 10, 2012 Share Posted January 10, 2012 Now i know im not famous on the nexus, most likely to my desire to never release my mods because most are just made for personal use or my brother. but i would love to jump in on this. I however have a lack of of skill in scripting and could learn with ease but time issues destroy me. However Ive already worked out a texture to use for mars grounds that seem to look just about the right color to me and think the McCarran Terminals are all the Model Structures we need and i could Very Easily create the World/environment using them. However we come to an issue.. all the windows are broken.. now this would make 2 things required. 1. All the npc's would have to be wearing space helmets 2. Your character would have to die if he takes off his space helmet. I suppose its possible to replace the windows with sealed lock down type ones but i don't have the time to do it and my model editing is rusty. And i lack the scripting skills to force a use of space suit. On another note. my time is limited so i wouldint really be able to do much of filling the world with mobs or quests. so im kinda limited to world Design :D ill get some screenshots when i get a chance and post them. revap Posted January 10, 2012 Share Posted January 10, 2012 Okay here are some of the Screen shots of what i got working in about 20 minutes or so, its all in a new world space so it does override anything.
