How to mod correctly?

I am fairly new to modding and have downloaded quite a few mods.

The question i have however, am i supposed to replace the files, or keep both files?

When i download multiple mods at once am i meant to keep all the original files or replace them?

Also ive noticed that a lot of mods use the same files

so when im modding do i need to replace the files from one mod to use the other? will the older mod still work? Or do i need to keep all the files?...

If two mods modify the exact same files, they might still work together, but only one set of files will appear in game. Say you get a mod that replaces all weapon textures, and then a mod that replaces the textures for all elven equipment - The second mod will overwrite the first one, but only for the elven weaponry, the rest will stay the same.

 

There are also cases where two mods will be incompatible based on this, but that won't be much of a concern until the construction set is released.
