seaturkey
The title pretty much spells it out but if you need some convincing... One of the most effective and commonly used weapons in ancient times was the spear and shield. It was simple to construct, relatively lightwieght, and had excellent range. Infact, the spear is the bread and butter weapon of any military force in history prior to the advent of the firearm. The Romans and Spartans used them with shields to annihilate charging enemy forces. Yet, despite it's historical signifigance and obvious practicality it's the most overlooked weapon from antiquity in video games. I mean seriously, have you ever even SEEN one in a video game? I sure haven't.
N0BL00D
You realise that the spartans/romans used the spears by hundreds? (Hundred people, in formation) (Prob cause a single spearman is easy to dodge as he just thrusts/defends forward while you can deflect it easily with your sword or shield)We, skyrim only got like 5-8 guards in a city (not enough) However, if it gets implemented:Pro's of spear:Longer reachBigger mob's can be killed easier. Con's:Meele guards will deflect it, and once its deflected (since spear is long) you cant really fight anymore as the spear will get in the way. (Throw away spear and use sword instead?)It thrusts only forward, not sideway, meaning its BAD if you miss.No defense at all. (Depends on spear, smaller spears + shield have been used, but mobility is reduced) Lots to think about, however if you can remake textures/meshes, just replace one of the staffs with a spear and use that one. I didn't think about the staff's in the game cause they're used to cast spells but I guess it wouldn't be too hard for a modder to do a reskin and a tweak or two to make it happen. But for the record (in regards to actual real-world use), I don't know where you get the idea that if you miss or get it deflected that it becomes useless. A spear is a thrusting weapon, just like throwing a jab with your fist, it's still faster and more efficient than swinging a sword (or throwing a right hook) would be. Watch "troy" with brad pitt where he fights eric bana (Hector of troy) to see how a pro wields one of those things, it's epic.
celebronyo
I would like to second this idea, and they could even get built into the 1h and 2h versions (a ps3 game by the name of White Knight Chronicles has a Spear weapon that's 1h that works well with a shield, really appeals. I can see if there's a video on YouTube of someone playing with it...) so you can pick a spear no matter what your character prefers to use for a melee weapon. It's the sort of thing that makes me wish modeling and texture design wasn't beyond my digital capabilities.
mikeplagens
In risk of drawing flames, may I suggest something more deadly just a remade staff, but something like Final Fantasy XIV has... If you're one of the 82 people that actually play that game you know what I mean. I think some useful enchantments would physically push back a foe that is coming in for a melee attack if you time it right. I think this would be great for a fighting monk/berserker kind of character with some new animations etc. Defense against long-ranged attacls would be hard though... Especially if that musket mod ever gets made.
JanusForbeare
I am reminded of a Vilja quote: "I'm not so sure about my weapons. Back in Morrowind, I always used a spear, but here in Cyrodiil I can't find one. Why do you think that is?" The ubiquitous caliper jokes also come to mind. Bismarck
It should be possible to add polearms (spears, pikes, halberds, bills, glaives). However, I don't know if it is possible to add them as seperate weapons with unique animations and perks. Due to the fact that Bethesda has made this game, it won't be possible. There is another option which has worked in Oblivion: just add them and use the in-game animations that look best. The add the reach bonus to polearms is definitely possible.
