Freezing at Load Screens

Recommended Posts

My game freezes very frequently -- maybe once every 10-15 minutes of gameplay. 90% of these freezes occur when I load a new area or fast travel. I have disabled autosaves and only quicksave via CASM, so I don't think it is a corrupt save. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. My mod list is below.

Wow. First advice, lower down your load order. If you havent cleaned up mod conflicts through FNVedit; theres bound to be plenty of conflicts with running a 100+ mod set. My rule of thumb, mods 50 and under your on the safe side. 50-70, you'll have conflicts but not anything serious, your still alright. 70-100, getting dangerous, definitely start paying attention. 100+ imminent danger. The number of mods you can run is totally up to your computer. There is no set number saying how many mods you can run without a fail. Some can only run up to about 60 mods, others up to even 150. For me, ive had no problems running at around 90-100 but for safety reasons i like to keep my load order around 75 at max 80.

If you havent, get the 4gb enabler and NVStutterRemover as well.

Thank you. I have 4gb play, and I will DL the stutter remover now. Hope that this will cut down on the freezing. I have a pretty high end computer so it does not stutter too much on ultra high settings.

UPDATE: The game continues to crash constantly at load screens even after downloading the stutter remover. This is after I got rid of a couple weapon mods and made a new merged patch via FNVEdit.

I'm debating on uninstalling and reinstalling the game. I have one major question though.

Since I installed this via steam, would it still keep all my old mods, etc. if I reinstalled? (I don't want this -- I would rather start with a clean slate)

If it does keep my old files, how do I do a completely clean reinstall?

Thanks in advance!

For a complete reinstall, do the following.

First make a backup of anything you want to save, such as save games.

Then proceed to uninstalling the game normally. Either through steam or control panel uninstall option, it really doesnt matter. In fact just uninstall it from steam.

Once the vanilla contents are all uninstalled, there will be remnants leftover such as mod related files and third party files. These you will have to remove manually.

Go into your FNV directory, usually steam>steammaps>common>FNV, and delete the FNV folder entirely. Then go into you documents, where your save games are located, and delete the FNV folder from there as well.

Now that you've uninstalled vanilla, modded, and third party files; all thats left is registry files. If you havent, get a program called CCleaner. What this tool does is, it gets rid of leftover registry files left behind by uninstalled programs. It also removes, unwanted files you no longer need on your computer as well.

There are two ways to remove registry files, you can manually do it by going into "regedit" or you can use CCleaner's registry cleaning tool. You can use CCleaner, but for efficiency i highly recommend doing it both since CCleaner doesnt always finish the job. Once you've downloaded CCleaner, go into the program and clean out your registry. The program is pretty simple and its straightforward so you shouldnt have any trouble navigating. After your done with that, go start>and in the box search programs and files box; type in regedit. Your registry should pop up. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then expand "software", check to see if there is anything CCleaner missed. Also check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. If you find anything related to FNV, delete it. If not, then good, CCleaner did its job.

Now that everything has been completely cleaned and erased, you must finalize but giving your computer a restart.

Finally after your computer has been rebooted, you can reinstall FNV as normal.

Hope this helped c:
