Question I can't confirm answers to

Right now the biggest problem I have is with companions and how they work since every site seems to have a different answer. The primary questions is:

Do companions level and how?

Because some people say they do but are bugged, and others say they don't and they are at whatever level you find them at forever. I have the game for console since my younger brother got it for me for my birthday as one of those gifts that are meant more for himself *hint hint*

Anyway I know that on PC you have to dismiss and do some console magic but what about 360? See one thread I read said if you dismiss and rehire they might level up but does anyone know if that is how it works? Does anyone know what the official story is on this?

Thanks in advance. Lydia and I have been through hell together and I don't want to lose her because of something so stupid.

Your companion's level goes up, but not their stats.

On the pc you have to dismiss them, disable, enable then have them follow you again. Checking their stats before and after will show you the change.

On the other platforms - nothing you can do from what I hear. They stay gimp all the way up.

Lydia won't die (generally) unless you deal the killing blow e.g. badly placed arrow shot, a shout etc.

From what I know the level is set when you first encounter the NPC and doesn't level up. I guess it's comparable to finding iron and steel weapons in the beginning and elven and dwarven later on. On xbox you cant change this.

Personally I think it would have been more logical to have followers level with you. Many other things do to (ie bandits, dragons).

However all follower NPC's start of with some basic stats so it's not like they become completely useless. If you are attached to Lydia there is no reason to break up over level differences.
