Is it at all possible to rename your character?

Yeah, it's quite easy actually. It takes some console work.

 

1. "player.showspecialmenu" which brings you the same naming menu that you got when talking to the Vault Rep at the door. Change your name.

 

Now if you raised any stats when levelling up, read the SPECIAL booklet, or found bobble heads or such, you'll notice you can't close that menu because you have something like -7 points left for your stats. I.e., you have too many points in your stats.

 

You'll have to take some points out from SOME stat or another.

 

But first make a note somewhere, what stats you had, because you'll want them back.

 

Now lower one or more stats. E.g., let's say it said -7 points left, and I have 5 Luck and 6 agility. I'll lower both to 2, which takes care of letting me close the menu.

 

 

2. But I'll want my points back, because I worked hard for them. So I'll open the console and go

 

"player.setav luck 5"

"player.setav agility 6"

 

Well, without the quotes, but you get the idea.

As a sidenote, changing your character name will cause the game to track/categorise your character's saves as if it were a completely new character--ie, when you go to the save loading menu, you will have to press T to "switch characters" between your character when they had their original name and the same character when they have their new name,

To close the special menu without resetting your stats, you can enter the hidemenu specialmenu console command.

 

Your name is changed immediately when you edit the Name field in the SPECIAL menu - no need to "accept" changes to have the name stick.

Sorry for shameless bump of the thread but I think this needs more attention. To rename the player character:

1. Open console

2. Type in "player.showspecialmenu"

3. Change your name

4. Confirm with pressing the Enter-key (no additional changes, crucial)

5. Open console and close the menu by typing in "hidemenu specialmenu" into the console

6. Profit!

This should change your character name without altering anything else.

Thanks a bunch for letting us all know. I'm one of those guys who wants to see what happens at the end of all four factions, but I don't wanna be wasting time redoing everything every time I want to see what the other faction is like.
