Are you running the Direct to Disk (D2D) version of Oblivion? if so I have seen several other posts stating that they could not get OBMM, OBSE or other programs to work. No fix for that either.

Actually, its not just D2D. I've got a standard english (well, American) edition of Oblivion, complete with disk. Well, actually, I think there's still a disk, but it hasn't come out of my drive in over 8 months, so . . .

But anyway, I'm unable to run OBSE at all either. This isn't the thread to discuss my system, but just thought I'd through that out there. From what I've heard, Cazaam does not have D2D, but his problem does sound similar to mine.

Suggestion: A complete reinstall. If you'd already patched Oblivion, then I believe the patch shouldn't work again (it would look for the original file information). Try completly uninstalling and reinstalling Oblivion (keep your save games and mods, but reinstall the program. This might clear things up. If you still can't patch (and remember only to use the most recent patch - don't try to layer them), then I've got a workaround that has worked for me (in addition to no OBSE, I have to do a workaround to patch).

This assumes that you installed oblivion in the default directory C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion. If you did not, that may be part of your problem, as some other installer programs expect to find it there.

To keep your game when reinstalling, make a new directory outside of the Bethesda folder, label it Oblivion backup

Copy everything from your \Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion folder except Oblivion.exe (the main Oblivion game)

Make a second folder and label it oblivion saves

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\your name\my documents\my games\oblivion

Copy everything in this folder into the Oblivion saves folder

put you Oblivion CD in and if it auto starts select the uninstall. If it does not, you must start it manually.

After it completes the uninstall, reinstall Oblivion. Don't bother to install any patches yet. You should not have to reinstall any of the Knights of the Nine stuff because they will be saved along with the Data file.

Before proceeding, start the game to be sure it installed properly. Make a save. I don't know why, but it seems to work better if you do this.

Exit the game and install Shivering Isles. Again, start the game, let it give you the new messages and again make a save.

Now, install only the newest Shivering Isles Patch from the Bethesda site. Again, start the game and make a save. You should be up to the latest version.

Now, after you are sure everything is working properly, Install OBSE and OBMM. Read the instructions first - they are not mods, but separate programs that must be loaded before Oblivion starts.

Now copy the stuff you backed up back into the original locations. You should have a fully patched game with the extra functionality that OBSE brings and the mod handling ability of OBMM. Note that you don't have to convert your mods to Omod to use OBMM, it works with regular esp files too. After you understand what you are doing with OBMM, and why, you might want to try converting some of them.

Good luck with your reinstall. Let us know how it works out.

Well i did all that that but nothing has changed. in fact when i reinstalled, the data file was unchanged.

My mate borrowed (*cough*stole) oblivion and i cant get it back for a few adys, but nothing changed. oh and by the way, i dont have si, is that a problem?

If your data file is unchanged then you missed the part about saving your original data file with another name before reinstalling. Just rename the entire \data folder to something like \olddata. The oblivion uninstaller does not remove the data file or the saved files. The install just seems to overwrite the original parts of the data file while leaving anything that was changed there. There is a good tutorial on uninstalling here http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=41082

After you get it to work try installing the proper Oblivion patch for your language version - note there are 2 English language versions and they are different UK & US. If you do not have SI then use the latest Oblivion patch from here http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

Before attempting to install any mods, OBSE or OBMM start the game and make a save. This initializes stuff that needs to be initialized in a new game.

After you know that the game works, then install the OBSE using the provided instructions.

Hope this helps.

If your download did not have the readme.txt file, maybe it is missing somthing else also.

The OBSE files do not go in the /data folder because OBSE is not a 'mod' but a separate program that must be started before Oblivion is started. You must copy them into your Oblivion directory. Unless you put it somewhere else, the default path is C:\Program files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion

If you are running SI you only need the latest SI patch and NOT the oblivion patch. if you are NOT running SI then use the latest Oblivion patch and NOT the SI patch.

No, don't run the loader 'thing' while playing the game.

After OBSE is installed as per the read me. then instead of using the oblivion launcher (that cool icon that oblivion puts on your screen) use the OBSE launcher instead. I think you have to go to the oblivion folder and make a shortcut, then move the shortcut to your desktop. once you get that working, you can get rid of the original Oblivion icon - it's really just a shortcut to Oblivion.exe in the /Oblivion folder- The OBSE launcher starts OBSE first, Then starts oblivion for you.

If you already have OBMM, and if you don't I recommend that you get it, OBMM can launch OBSE and Oblivion for you when you start it. I recommend you read the read me for OBMM before trying that.

Good luck, hope you get it working. It;'s definitely worth the effort.

But Ben, there is more to it than that. I read the install instructions in the Read Me and it says:

Copy obse_1_1.dll, obse_1_2.dll, obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_0.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_loader.exe to your Oblivion directory. It doesn't say anything about the "src" folder that is also included and I have no idea what that is. I always do exactly what the Read Me installation instructions say, I've learned the hard way that you should. I know I don't need the Read Me and the other Text documents in there too, so I just keep them in a separate folder for future reference. So, what do I do with this "src" folder? Do I just drop it in the Oblivion/ as well? I won't install OBSE until I know what to do with everything included.
