Vanishing dropped items

Hey everybody. I'm new to the forum, so nice to meet you.

So, I've been having this problem that's driving me friggin nuts. When I drop stuff and come back later, especially after loading a saved game, it's totally gone. I've been playing the game for about a year now, and it's always happened, but thought it was normal. Now that I have a house and I want to put my loot in there between quests, I'm realizing that it's definitely not normal. In each house I try out (I'm picky), I test it with something expendable like an apple or a spell scroll I don't need. Even my BOOKS vanish off a shelf. It's really a bummer, cuz I was so looking forward to settling into a house with my cougar :(.

Btw, I do have mods running. A lot but not a whole whole lot. I've been uninstalling the ones I don't want lately so as to declutter the scene. I know now that it may have corrupted the game permanently or something :(

I've been having a lot of probs which I don't mean to go on about, so I'm just asking about the vanishing deal. I've got the 1.2.0.4blahblahblah patch running on something... but I think it's on oblivion rather than SI, because I tried installing the SI patch and I got that message about it already being there under that file name so it wouldn't install. I also got the UNofficial 2.2 patch last night, but it didn't help.

OH YEAH... BTW this isn't regarding respawning containers. I get that whole deal. I'm talking about just setting stuff down in the middle of the floor or on a table.

Thanks for listening, all. Any insights? :wallbash:

I see what you mean. But face it, if you saw a massive steel axe in the middle of the street while a massive portal to a hostile world with monsters comeing out of it was outside you city, you may just take it. But in your house it shouldn't go awy. perhaps you could code certain cells to leave items where they are or not respawn. say if a guard was killed in your house, it would stay there. just and idea

If you have Shivering Isles there is a bug that causes items to vanish when you leave them unattended for a while.

The fix is to get the latest patch v1.2.0416 from The Elder Scrolls website. http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

If you have to do the reinstall, be sure to back up your saves and Oblivion.ini files first. Otherwise you might be starting over.

Yeah... thanks for the help guys. I'm almost sure that SI is the problem. I really don't want to uninstall... I'll have to see if I can find another way to get the patch to work. I get this error message about not being able to install the patch because another file with the same name already exists, although the content doesn't match. Argh. I've read that that means I've got the Oblivion 1.2.0.416 patch rather than the SI one. But I didn't install it, so I don't know. My boyfriend installed it for me, and he doesn't remember. I've looked all through my mod folders and system files trying to find the old patch so I can get rid of it, but I can't find it. I think I saw another thread on this topic last night while reading, I'll go try and find it.

Man... we must really love this game to go through so much grief over it. ;)

OK... nothing I try is working with regard to installing the patch. It's looking like I may need to do the reinstall thing if I want the game to work properly. So my next question is, what can I do to have the greatest possible chance of saving my old game and having it work? I've already backed up the actual save files, and the 3 other documents in the "My Games" folder: "Oblivion" Configuration Settings (is this the .ini thing you were talking about?), "BlendSettings" Configuration Settings, and a text doc entitled "RendererInfo."

However, I've got a butt-load of mods running, and I've been told it's pretty iffy that I'll be able to get my old game to work after a re-installation unless I can reload the mods in the exact same order. I have no idea what order that is. It was done a long time ago by someone else, so actually knowing is out of the question. What else can I do, and what are the odds this might actually work the way I hope it will? LoL

That should put you back to where you were with the right patch installed. A lot of work to fix something that Bethesda screwed up.

Maybe someone else has an easier procedure, but this is what I did the last time I had to reinstall and it worked.

Yeah, it sounds like a lot of work, but you're instructions are awesome. I think I'm gonna give it a go. Hopefully my saved character will make it through the mess unscathed. Again, many thanks. I'll post again when I know how it turned out. o_O
