Sins of the Damned

This idea sounds a whole lot smoother in my head. If I were a modder and had a capable PC, I'd just create it instead of this lousy attempt at describing it.

Exploring the plains of Whiterun, you discover a field strewn with the gruesome sight of bloodied Imperial and Stormcloak corpses. A few bandit scavengers pick over the battlefield. It's a sobering reminder of the current state of Skyrim. At midnight, however, something strange occurs. Ghostly apparitions of the dead soldiers rise out of their bodies and do battle. Every hour until sunrise, those "slain" during the ghost's fighting will once again rise up and enter the fray. Once the sun rises, the apparitions fade away. The ghosts will take no notice of you and your weapons do no harm. If you use the Become Ethereal shout or Philter of the Phantom while the ghosts are active, one of them will approach you.

Damned soul:

"Your body does not lay in this divines-forsaken field. How is it that I can see you now?"

To which you can reply (each with "what is happening here"):

* (lie) I was killed by bandits nearby.

* I am Dovakiin, by the power of the Voice you see me now.

* I drank a potion. Didn't know it would work!

* What business is it of yours? You don't need to know.

Each option will grant a slightly varied response. The phantom then tells the dreadful tale of the battle. Once the dust had settled, a strange mage cursed the soldiers to eternally battle. He explains how they are driven to fight against their will and still feel the pain of every death. Maybe you can find this mage and persuade him to release the curse.

You can accept or say that they deserve their fate and you won't help.

If you decide to help, you will discover a cabin in the woods. Inside you will find the mage's journal describing how Imperials took his son away to be executed and drunken Stormcloaks violated and killed his wife and daughter. In his anger and grief, he created a staff out of black soul gems that can bind souls to the wielder's will. He used it to raise the dead of a nearby battlefield and forced them to eternally battle. You will find him slumped against the grave of his wife, having killed himself out of despair.

Once you have the staff and return to the battlefield, the soldiers will no longer be fighting since you are the new owner of the staff. One of them will approach and ask what you intend to do.

* Release all the bound souls of both sides.

They thank you for the sweet release of Sovngard and fade away.

* Release only the souls of the Imperials or Stormcloaks.

The released side says they wish the torture could have ended for both of them, but are glade they are free. The captive side curses you, furious, but are now bound to you. You can release them later if you wish.

* Reinstate the last orders of the mage.

Both sides are once again cursed to eternally fight. The staff is cleared so that you may use it on other souls.

How the staff works:

Holding attack raises the staff into the air, drawing all nearby dead souls into it in an animation similar to soul trap. Once all the souls are absorbed, releasing attack slams the staff into the ground, sending out a wave of energy and summoning the phantoms of the dead. These ghostly apparitions now act like essential companions. They cannot die, only fall to their knees, and you can tell them to wait, attack, ect. Attacks with the staff can also direct them much like the spider control rod. Holding attack while the staff has captive souls summons all souls to the player regardless of distance or wait status.

Holding down block releases all souls currently bound to the staff, sending balls of light (the souls) up into the sky. This clears the staff and allows you to collect new souls.

There is no charge required to use the staff. (It's a soul staff, after all. The captive souls power it.)

The staff works on corpses of any NPC; bandits, necromancers, companions, citizens, whatever.
