Oblivion is being a pain in the arse.

Had to go eat something. So the game is version 1.2.0416 or something and it also says that in the main menu, at the lower left corner of the screen? Like here (in spoiler):

Maybe Google could help. This is the first time I remember seeing the Oblivion Launcher without the preset buttons. Or maybe I just cannot remember. Do you have any other games installed on the computer to test, to see if those other games recognise your graphics card properly?

Yeah witcher 3 does. And I can play that game on ultra textures, and have ssao on with sharpening all the way to high. And shadows of Mordor detects my gpu as well. I've tried googling on this issue but I can't find anything. :( Which is very surprising considering on how old this game is.

I also tried Google, but nothing came up. This is absolutely baffling. Especially if you really have the latest version of the game - and therefore the launcher.

Could it be related to the order in which you applied the patches? I think there was a certain order that was supposed to be followed for the disk version patches. Also two 1.2 patches, one for Shivering Isles and one for without it. Applying the 1.2 patch for not-SI before installing SI was something that might have cause issues if I remember correctly.

And WHY does it say you have completely another sort of graphics hardware?! I have never see that before, on any game. You would not happen to have two GPUs on the computer, one being that 9600 GT? Is it a desktop?

Edit: So it does not show the version number in main menu? Odd. Does OBSE work?

How about right-clicking Oblivion.exe and OblivionLauncher.exe ans selecting Properties? The version numbers should apparently be there, at least. Here is a screenshot of mine for reference:

Oblivion is 1.2.0416 and the launcher 1.0.0.1 apparently. If that helps.

Edit: I need to go take a shower and make some coffee. Will be back later.

Looks fine. What does the OblivionLauncher.exe show? The one in the same folder as Oblivion.exe, since that seems to be the one with issues identifying your graphics card. Also, where is the game installed? If you have it installed inside a Program Files folder (for example C:\Program Files (x86)\....), then maybe, just maybe the Windows UAC is to blame. It seems to do all sorts of funny things.

When you have located OblivionLauncher.exe (in the Oblivion directory), could you also take a screenshot of it - just like you did with Oblivion.exe? And then also try running it as administrator to see if it changes anything (right-click, run as administrator)?

I am starting to run out of ideas by now. This is so odd. :pinch:

Edit: I meant the UAC can do funny things, not finny things. Corrected that. It can seem a bit fishy, though....

I do have it installed in program files (86) where should I move it to? And do I have to re install Oblivion ? Or can I just cut and paste the Oblivion folder into a diferent directory?

If you cut and paste it, there will probably be all sorts of registry entries and other things pointing in the wrong place. Uninstalling, cleaning the registry in case the uninstalling software does not do it (automated tools might work just fine and clean most of the issues left in registry), then reinstalling it elsewhere might work.

But I would still try running OblivionLauncher.exe as administrator first, to see if it helps. I had Oblivion installed in the Program Files (x86) for years without any issues, but that was with Windows 7. Sometimes running a program as administrator helps, but that obviously does not mean you should run everything as administrator.

Clean out the registry? What registry?
