avwandle
Got a question about "Discerning the Transmundane" During this quest, you obtain the "Elder Scroll". Now, my character has not even met the greybeards yet but has the Elder Scroll which, after attempting to drop it in a display case,I discovered that it is a main quest item. My question is have I screwed up my game because I've already obtained the elder scroll or will it be the same as in Whiterun where, if you've already cleared bleakfalls barrow, the mage just says "oh you already have the dragonstone? Good". Anybody know?
xlr8films
According to Wiki, it shouldn't break anything. But dang the Scroll is 20 pounds!

Yeah, but the Oghma Inifnium is +5 to combat/magic/stealth skills and I want to use it before any of my skills get to 100. Ixflashpointxi
You can get rid of the Elder scroll if you go the librarian Orc at the college of winterhold. He also gives you 2000 septims for it.

I thought that broke the latter part of the MQ? Or can you buy it/go get another one? I'm not that far along yet, I just remember someone complaining about it once. Or you could just finish the MQ to play it safe

xlr8films
What about before that point in the MQ, though? Can I sell it and just buy it back later when I need it?

Technically, you didn't need to pick up the Elder Scroll to finish "Discerning the Transmundane," Septimus Signus simply needs the Runed Lexicon to continue with the dwarven lockbox. I was able to complete the quest as a mage (even before entering Riverwood to start the first MQ quest), and I didn't pick up the Elder Scroll - it was still there days later, long after I completed the quest.
