Lost follower (but with a hitch!)

So I've lost my follower and I don't know how to find him.

 

But this isn't an ordinary situation that can be resolved by the console commands I'm familiar with (ie prid).

 

I was messing around with the addtofaction command and tried it on a generic farmer. It worked and I had some dolt following me with his cow until I entered a town. Now he's gone and no other followers will join me because he's still technically following me.

 

I can't track him down because he's just a farmer and doesn't have a unique id (or would he?). Fast travel doesn't work either.

 

Console command wizards, I summon you!

 

EDIT: Solved. Command "set playerfollowercount to 0" did the trick.

i just wanted to confirm this fixed my follower problem when nothing else would...i did an extra step that seemed to help though...let me explain: **possible spoilers ahead**

 

i had mjoll as my follower. i had completed all of the companion quests (except the ones that dont ever end). i had used the special scroll to witness the events in the past...and when i returned...mjoll was no where to be seen.

 

i knew she wasnt dead because i couldnt accept a new follower. here are the things i tried to get her back:

 

fast traveled

went back to where she hangs out if you dismiss her

waited 5 days

slept 5 days

used the console command to bring her to me

used the console command to put me where she was.

 

a note on those last 2 things...if i used the command to bring her to me nothing seemed to happen

if i used the command to put me where she was..i went to the throat of the world (where i last saw her) but she wasnt there.

if i used the command to bring her to me...then used the command to put me where she was...it would put me wherever i was when i used the command to bring her to me...but she wouldnt actually be there.

 

now i couldnt do the companions quest that would kick her out as a follower as i had done it already.

 

this is what finally worked:

 

i used the command in this post "set playerfollowercount to 0" then i used the command to bring her to me...which still didnt seem to work. i then used the dissable / enable commands on her id and bingo! there she was...just as id left her with all the right equipment and everything.

 

hope this helps anyone else who might be stuck not able to get a follower back.
