CTD when nearing Whiterun for the first time in playthrough, maybe because of giant attack?

I started a new character and as I'm nearing Whiterun for the first time in the game, I CTD. I suspect it has something to do with the giant attack. I get to witness the attack but for some reason when the giant is killed, I CTD. I have tried disabling mods, et cetera, but I have no luck. Please help :c
