Playing this Game

So, for the past few days, I've been doing everything in my power to get Morrowind to work. I have the GOTY edition and every time I try to start playing the game, it tells me that a certain file is missing. First it was the font 0 Magic cards thing, then it was the snowflake for Bloodmoon, then it was another file, and another, and another, and when I finally got to the initial loading screen, the game notified me of an absolute ton of files that were missing.

It says something along the lines of "cannot find xxxxx, would you like to continue?" There are so many files missing, I have to push "yes" literally dozens of times before it lets me to the main menu, and then the game just crashes. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, reinstalling with anti-virus off, running in Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode, running as administrator....nothing works.

So, here's my question (two questions, really). Could someone with an extremely kind, generous soul put their entire Morrowind folder (including whatever mods you have, I don't care) up for download somewhere (including .ini settings)? I know that's kind of a lot to ask, but I'm at my wit's end here. Failing that, does anyone have an advice on what could possibly be wrong?

Thanks

The main issue with putting up the Morrowind folder for download is that it would technically be illegal to do so. Anyone would then be able to download said folder and play the game for free. I'm no goodie-twoshoes and am not stating that to be judgmental. Just merely pointing out why that may be a bad idea for someone to do it. It would most likely get taken down for legal violations.

Edit: As far as what could be wrong, try to install the game in another folder other than your Program Files which is typically where the install disc defaults. If you're on Win7, there can possibly be issues with installing some older programs in the Program Files folder.

Also, and you may or may not be doing this, but make sure you're installing the game and its expansions in the correct order, otherwise they won't work.

Morrowind>Tribunal>Bloodmoon. Any order other than that and the game will usually fail to start.

Ah, yes, didn't think of that. What about if it was only the data files folder? That's what seems to being such a hassle.

The Data files folder would still be in violation because that is where Bethesda's Textures and meshes are, both of which are copyrighted. I don't think that will be necessary though. Try those other two things first if you haven't already. It very much sounds like an expansion install order problem.

The way to test this would be to install only Morrowind first without the expansions. Load it up. If the game starts without the expansions being installed, then it's most likely something with the expansion install order.

To me, it sounds like it is an expansion install problem. Start over.

Install Morrowind. Then install Tribunal. Then install Bloodmoon.

Do it in that exact order. If you install Bloodmoon before Tribunal, you get weird errors and I think that snowflake one is one of them but I'm not 100% positive on that.

That should get the base game running properly.

If you're adding mods, make sure you are following installation instructions properly. Some mods aren't packaged as well as others. For most mods, as long as you drop them into the data files folder they will go to their proper place, but be careful, sometimes people package them so they only have to be dropped into the Morrowind folder. If you have a Data Files folder inside your Data Files folder, that's a problem. If you do, take out that folder with its contents and put it on your desktop. Then open the Data Files folder that is on your desktop and move all the contents into the Data Files folder in your Morrowind folder and that includes all folders inside folders.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I had the same problem. Just do a fresh install, no mods yet, and check to make sure the game works after each installation. Bloodmoon was still borked (snowflake error thing) when I did that, but if you right click and run as admin (Windows 7, not sure if Vista has that) it won't be a problem. Hasn't been for me at least.
