rpgmoods
i am building a new system and want to play oblivion very bad. I had morrowind for the xbox and couldn't get enough. My new pc will run vista 64. 4g ram pny8600 512 graphics. I have been reading this forum and are seeing some problems with vista 32 but no one has said anything about 64. I have an option to run xp 32 on my system as well but i will have to buy it this time.(not my pc i'm on)Should i go to the trouble of running 2 operating systems or will vista 64 be ok? If no, will linnux run oblivion? Already purchased vista.
ResidentWeevil2077
I don't use an x64 (64-bit) OS, so I can't really say much, other than Oblivion might be incompatible with 64-bit Windows. You can't run the game on Linux (as most games aren't programmed for it like Doom 3, Quake Wars, and pretty much every id Software game). If I were you, I'd play it safe and stick to an x86 (32-bit) OS, like XP Home/Pro, or Vista Premium 32-bit. I wouldn't know abut running 2 OSes on the same machine, as running one for me is trouble enough.
damstachizz
First things first, get the 256mb version of the 8600..runs faster than the 512.I have run Oblivion on 3 Vista installs..one of those were 64bit Ultimate..It ran fine, but had to be updated to 1.2..not a big deal really. And as for my Question, why are you running 64bit, and 4gb of Ram, yet buying an 8600??!!? serious. If this is the case, run 32bit, 2gb of Ram, and an 8800.. bruschijr
<----- Vista Home Edition (64 Bit) works fine for me... Dunno what this has to do with, but since you have the same OS as me I'll go ahead and mention it. I got the D2D online download version and was having trouble in some spots. I would get 60+ FPS and then it would randomly drop to 1 or 2 FPS in dungeon small tunnels. I deleted it and got the real hard copy DVD version from a store... never had that issue again. Might have only been my issue, but, just wanted to point that out incase you were thinking about getting the D2D version... supposedly it's encrypted differently or something. I don't know much about this stuff :) just know that I had problems running it.
ResidentWeevil2077
I was reading about your problem bruschijr. I guess you found out the hard way  Anyway, I will say that I never used, or will ever intend to use the D2D service. My only reason being that the encryption sounds shoddy, and people shouldn`t be lazy to go out and buy a hard copy of any game.
Abramul
For what it's worth, this page looks to cover getting Oblivion to run in Linux.
ResidentWeevil2077
I've never seen that - I always thought you could run progs made for Windows on Linux. But alas, I find the process of running ANY app under Linux to be rather... complicated, only because it's a lot of manual command input (akin to DOS), and quite frankly I have enough headaches already using Windows
