Soul Gem pricing - IMO broken in vanilla skyrim

Hi all,

So just starting out on a new game and decided to do something i havent done before, soul hunting.

I go with an argonian, skilled with bow, blah blah blah

I buy some petty soul gems and bow of soul capture (lucky it was for sale in first shop i went in!) so i have 6 or so empty petty soul gems, they are worth 4 gold each to sell. My plan is to go fill em up and sell em. However as i discover a soul gem keeps the value of its empty counterpart even once full....this is wrong! if you check the shops you have to pay more for a full version of a soul gem thsn the empty version so why do i get scewed over at the shops.

So my attempted "new career" has been thwarted straight of the bat!

Can anyone offer any support on how i or someone could go about rectifying this flaw in the game?

Use the filled soul gem and enchant random gear.

Absorb X sells for quite a lot. Can push an item worth 10 gold upwards to 130.

I see what youre saying but from a role playing and game machanics point of view its broken. I might not want to go down the enchanting route and stick to being a "gem trader". I suppose it does give me way to coninue my game but not ideal.

Well, a lot of thing isn't ideal as of now.

By the way, isn't it quite, eh, 'sadistic' to be a gem trader who fills soul gems with souls of creatures? ;)

Perhaps mining would be better for that kind of character.

The Ck will fix it, I am sure :)

yep, that was the point :D hence the choice of the argonian, reptiles are usually portrayed as a bit evil in fantasy games so I thought id role with it (pun/typo intended).

im sure it will but was looking for possible fixes other than waiting for CK. Im patient enough though and this game has lots of life in it yet.

I agree with the OP. The price-value not changing on self-filled soul gems doesn't make any sense. That's gotta be an oversight by Bethesda.

And yes, it's true that you can use those self-filled gems too make big bucks enchanting everything instead...

...but you're not considering that many player-builds aren't gonna want such rapid skill-rank increases in Enchanting, because it will level them too quickly and cause their true combat skills to lag behind where they should really be for their current level.

Just using self-filled gems to enchant everything you sell would be okay provided you're already high level and have maxed your true primary skills, but for non-mage characters that are low-level, it's a bad idea that'll just end up making the game a lot harder (despite all the money you'll have).

So yeah, we need a mod that fixes the pricing of self-filled soul-gems.

  • 9 months later...

Thought better to reply here than start a new thread. Has this been fixed because I've just noticed the same thing in my game and now it's really bothering me. :)

EDIT: I've just reinstalled Skyrim and if memory serves me it never used to be this way. In my currently inventory I have some filled gems (Lesser Gems filled with Lesser Souls). The ones I've picked up full command the additional fee when selling them it seems. The ones I've filled myself do not. :-/
