I cant make a new save!!!

for some reason every time I try an start a new character CTD!

also I later found that it also CTD's if I try an change a previous saves character name. Does anyone know what might cause this?

What have you added or removed recently? What version of the game are you using? What Windows are you using and where is the game installed? Is this a Steam Install? What mods do you have installed, and what is their load order?

installed in -my documents/games/...

Its hard to say if it was a recent mod.... I haven't tried creating a new character or changing my characters name until today

You say you installed the game in "My Documents". That folder is used for saves and such, where is your data folder?

 

Have you installed and run BOSS? Your load order looks a bit off, but i can't be certain.

I put my oblivion data and stuff in there as well. The Bethesda folder sits next to the Oblivion folder that holds my saves

I do have boss... but I'm not 100% that I'm using it right.

Yes, just run it and it should sort your order. As to where you installed the game, I am not certain about that folder being away from the UAC in windows Vista and 7. If no one else is able to help you resolve this, you might consider installing in c:\Games\Oblivion or something similar. Windows is still going to want to put some stuff in the My Documents folder, but I don't think there is any way around that, and it doesn't cause any issues.

well i moved the install location- didn't help

rebuilt my game- the problem stopped... for awhile

I was able to create a new character and edit his name

a couple days later- found that I again could not change the character name :(

and I'm pretty sure its not save game corruption because I haven't saved over a previous save at all this time around

I actually downloaded "incremental saver" just to avoid corrupt saves

It was save game corruption, rebuilt my game and it works fine now
