Armour makes no difference

Hi there. I have been playing the game for a couple of weeks now, but have recently suspected that what I wear seems to have no observable affect on my armour level in the game. Yep, it shows up on the screen that have some pretty hefty armour, but when I go into Mist Watch (where I tested the theory), I get struck down in pretty similar fashion whether I wear armour, or go in in me loin cloth. Also, the bandits seem to do just as much damage to me with a bow, in my Flawless Orcish armour, as I do to their half naked fur armoured bodies with my Flawless Elven Bow and glass arrows. Same with my great sword - have to strike them three or four times to kill them, and can get stabbed to death with a dagger in the mean time. It's a bit of a joke I think. If I can't sort it out, or I am missing some in game element, then I am going to struggle continuing with the game. I have had a deliberate strategy to go for heavy armour and to collect and fashion the items required, and if it turns out that this has no effect on the game, I am struggling to see myself continuing with it.

I love the game and the environment it creates, I still have loads more to play, and I've already done more than in most full games, but I find this a big issue in maintaining the momentum. Should I just give up on the armour and run about Skyrim Naked? Not a bad idea I suppose, but I would prefer it if there is something I can do to restore the ballance. Any ideas?

PS I don't want to use God items, I just want the game to act as it is meant to, sorry if I have missed something obvious.
