Help request: How to mod Skyrim?

As the topic implies.. there's something I'd like to try in Skyrim that I can't find in mods released so far. I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty but am very very green in terms of where to start. I've looked for tutorials but not found anything that looks like a likely place to start. I'll start by explaining what I'd like to do...

I'm playing a "heavy" character at the moment - reliant on melee combat and so on. I've currently got Dragon armor equipped but find that both this and Daedric armor look far too evil for my liking. As much as it's possible in Skyrim - I'm not really RPing an evil guy and feel a bit silly wandering around with spikes and horns all over the shop.

That said, something like Full Plate looks much more realistic for my needs. Fairly simple... not evil or "good". Just functional.

However I don't want to get penalised in terms of armour rating and what have you. as there's quite a difference between dragon/daedric armor levels and steel plate.

I would like to (if possible) create an entirely new set of armor that draws on the designs of steel plate but has the "rating" of dragon or daedric. Not looking for "god" armor here... just something that matches the specs of the high level armors but with a different look.

Any ideas / help please? :)

Have you tried the Elder Scrolls Construction Set Wiki Beginner's Guide? It's for Oblivion's CS, but it will be pretty useful once Skyrim's CK comes out, which will be, I hope, pretty much the same deal. If you don't have Oblivion and/or it's CS or you don't want to wait until (the end of) January, I'm afraid I can't help you.

Hi ALittleBird, I've not tried the Construction Set yet... figured it might be different from one game to the next but if not then I'll maybe have a poke around - may just wait till the end of Jan though as this problem of mine isn't huge ;)

Sunnie, again thanks for replying and I have tried Ebony armor (and it's a much better "look" than the Dragon and Daedric from my point of view but there is a noticeable drop in performance that I'm less than keen on...)

Yes, theres a drop in protection rating, and it may be large enough for a melee build to be undesirable, but there are currently ways around that with just the console and smithing skill. Of course this will be a trivial thing to do once the toolset is out by just making a new set of Ebony with the same defense rating as Dragon. You can improve a set of Ebony to the same as Dragon by temporarily bumping your smithing skill to 225-250ish and then improving it on a workbench. Of course I am assuming you are already using Dragon armor thats been improved with a smithing skill of 100...

That's right... though I've not "artificially" bumped my smithing skill yet using enchanted gear / potions so I might look at that as an option. I'm sure I could do the same with Dragon armor and get something even stronger but honestly I'm not too fussed about having the *absolute* best - just something that isn't significantly handicapped vs. what I could naturally craft myself.

Cheers for the help though, I'll look into enchanting and - failing that - sit on my hands till the mod kit comes out :)

What you could also do is get a BSA extractor (Fallout Mod Manager for example) and search through the Skyrim Models for the Ebony and Dragon bone armor. Extract them to your Data directory(including the whole directory tree they are in) and rename+copy the Ebony meshes over the Dragon meshes(just don't edit anything inside the bsa files). I didn't try that myself but as far as I know you should then see every Dragonarmor as if it was a Ebony armor if the system hasn't changed too much from Oblivion. Not the best fix, but it might hold you over till there are mods for stuff like that. Edited by Roltak
