GenghisKhanIT
There are basically two ways to build a character in Oblivion: Roleplay or Powergame. 1) Roleplay: you imagine a picture of the person you want to be (a mage, a thief/assassin, a paladin,...), possibly with a background history and then start to ask yourself: What weapon would he use ? bow, sword, axe, poisoned knives, magic ?What kind of armor ? light, heavy, none (ex:a barbarian) ?Would he be a magic adept ? not at all, only for curing, mainly magic ?And so on.Then you pick the race, birthsign, and of course major skills which better fit to your answers. 2) Powergame: you want a class that has all the best available to do his work and that can level up in a quite controllable way. Of course it mainly depends on your playing style. a) Pure melee fighter - Race: Redguard or Orc; Birthsign: Warrior; Specializ: Combat; Attributes: Endurance, Strength; Major skills: Blade (OR Blunt), Block, Heavy armor, Restoration, Armorer, Athletics, Acrobatics, (last 2 is to control leveling up). While leveling up, focus early on Endurance and Strength, later perhaps Agility and Speed. Enchant your armor with a mix of Feather, Fortify Strength-Health and Elemental Magic Resistance. b) Melee/Magic balanced - Race: Dark elf; Birthsign: Mage;, Specializ: Combat/Magic; Attributes: Endurance, Intelligence; Major skills: Blade (OR Blunt), Block, Heavy armor (or light if you prefer being faster), Destruction, Alchemy, Restoration, Acrobatics. Focus early on Endurance, Intelligence if you tend to use magic, or Strength; later, willpower and Agility/Speed. If you have light armor enchant it with Shield effect early. Other enchantements should be Feather, Fortify Magicka-Strength-Health.Consider becoming a vampire later in game, since you have high natural fire resistance. c) Pure mage - Race: Breton, Birthsign: Mage bet safe, Atronach is harder early, but you will be very powerful later; Specializ: Magic, Attributes: Intelligence, Willpower; Makor skills: Alchemy, Destruction, Restoration, Marksman, Blade, Light armor, Mercantile. Of course focus needs to be on Intelligence and Willpower. d) Archer - Race: Wood Elf (even Dark Elf would do); Birthsign: Thief or Warrior; Specializ: Combat; Attributes: Agility and Strength; Major skills: Marksman, Alchemy, Light Armor (but you can also consider using Heavy Armor), Block, Blade, Acrobatics, Athletics. Focus on Agility, Speed, Endurance. You can also throw in some magic by replacing Athletics with Destruction. Other suggestions: You should not take Alteration, Conjuration, Illusion or Mysticism as major skills, or you would level up far too quickly. You can always replace one of the favorite attributes with Luck, since you never have the chance to get +5 to Luck later ingame. Hope it helps.
madman132
Since you played already, you may have noticed some things: Some resistances as well as weaknesses arent much of an Advantage or Disadvantage. The Nord is frost resistant, which wont do him much good. I've experienced more Fireballs to be hurled at me than any other magic, including Frostspells. Being an Altmer (High Elf) isnt such a bad idea. Even with his weakness to magic, the game wont be too hard, since the Spellcaster enemies are not to many in the Game and some of them wont even cast Spells on you, but rather on themselves to protect them or to conjur a weapon to fight you. The Damage done with a conjured weapon wont be counted as "magic" damage, even if the Weapon is being "made" by magic. Damage done by the Enchantment of Weapons will hurt you, but then, most enchanted weapons found on enemies dont do very much magical damage. "Bretons" are good mages. But dont make a mage if you want to have a stealthy charakter. illusion mages may cast spells that make you harder to spot or even completly invisible, but every class may train Illusion. You wont get a damage for firering a spell at an enemy while he doesnt see you, true, but:If you attack with a weapon, you couldnt care less even if the Spell that makes you invisible drains your magicka completly. The Abilities of Argonians and Khajiit are pretty much useless, in my opinion. Argonians can breathe under water and cannot be bothered by poisons.Even an absolute "non mage" charakter can cast basic water breathing spells. Except you want to roleplay a char which hates magic and wont use it. But then, you may want to play a reguard character, since those people think Spellcasters cast Spells because they are to weak or to cowardly to actually fight. Khajiit have the ability to see in complete Darkness. But then, even a complete magic novice may cast basic night eye or light spells. Orcs are... well, they are green. If you want to make a big hulking monster with a Warhammer the size of a child, this is the one. Nords are pretty much Orcs, but without the Green Skin =)Warhammers, Claymores, Axes, Heavy Armor. Nords. Imperials are your normal politician. Want to Roleplay a Buereaucrat? Diplomat? Make a Imperial. And lay down some phrases in your Head to deal with preconceptions from Dunmers =)
Abramul
It's worth noting that if you choose a Breton, and find a Mundane Ring, wearing it makes you immune to hostile spells.
thekid345
Well you shouldn't expect suggestions if you dont tell us what you want. If you really wanna have fun try this Race:ImperialAtributes:Personality and LuckMaj. skills:Mercantile, Speechcraft, Mysticism, Security, Sneak,Alchemy I think the easiest class to beat the game with would be a Knight. But most deffinently the one at top would be very hard.

Just remember if you want to try a bit of everything, then go dark elf. Dark elves can use magic, blades, bows, and stealth effectively. And fire resistance definitely helps a bit since its the damage type most used by magic characters.
thekid345
No offense taken. I put most of the useless skills there because that would be very hard to beat the game with those skills. And security is actually a quite useful skill my friend

Cons: crappy stuff around. And security is quite useful :) until you perform Nocturnal's quest, which you can do at lvl10. Then it becomes totally useless. :(
southernbuilder
race:nord or if you have Norman modattributes: strength and agility Major skills: Blade, Block, Armorer, light armor, marksman, sneak and really the 7th skill for me is magical or Heavy armor I think makes the nord or other warrior type race well balance able to take fill most roles.
