milesn
This topic is old and out of date - topic closed as inaccurateBben46, Moderator Oct 13, 2011Hi I have checked thru this and other oblivion tech blogs to see if there was a similar issue to this but I cannot find one. The game is not loading at startup, oblivion .exe is returning the following error. It was working fine. AppName: oblivion.exe AppVer: 1.2.0.416 ModName: oblivion.exeModVer: 1.2.0.416 Offset: 00098749 Game was running OK two days ago, the only change I have made was as I was contemplating installing OOO so I was checking load order in OBMM, I shifted Oblivion.esm in front of CM Partners.esm. I have shifted it back - same error. I have turned off all mods - same error. Restart, rename oblivion_defaul.ini etc - same error. I am thinking the change in OBMM (it did not close properly that time) has re time satmped the oblivion.exe file and the loader does not recognise it any longer. I have tried re-running the SI 1.0416 patch to retime stamp but no luck. Anyway I suspect a re-install is in order -arghhh! Any other ideas? bben46
I recently did the same dumb thing as you, moved another esm ahead of Oblivion.esm in the load order. I moved it back and still crashed on start. It took 2 days of playing around, but I finally broke down and reinstalled. That fixed it. In order to salvage your game, Before you reinstall, rename your data file C:\program files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\data to something like Olddata. Then rename the oblivion folder in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion to something like oldoblivion. Using your original Oblivion CD - not any oblivion loader that you normally use - select uninstall. This will remove the file Oblivion.exe from your syatem I recommend rebooting you computer at this point Now, using your original legal Oblivion CD reinstall Oblivion. Then before installing any patches, start the game and make a save - this initializes some stuff. Before installing any patches, install Shivering Isles if you use it. again start the game and make a save. Now download and install the latest patch only. If you use Shivering Isles ONLY use the latest Shivering Isles Patch and NOT the Oblivion patch. If you do not use Shivering Isles, Only use the latest Oblivion patch. After you are satisfied that it works, you can rename the files you change back to their original names and you should be back where you were before you screwed with the esm load order. Now, while everything is working back up your data file and the oblivion folder in the documents. It might take a while as these can be large files. But it will enable you to easily return to this point in case of a more serious problem.
milesn
Bben 46 Many thanks, after a chat to Revenant last night over on TES Eye Candy I came to the same conclusions you have recommended. I am going to check thru your list to see if I missed anything. Your point re SI patch is interesting I tried reloading that yesterday to see if it overwrote the error but that did not work, but I will use it today. I used the uninstall instructions posted at Bethsoft Unofficial Technical FAQ I found here. I have the game running at the vanilla stage and am now reinstalling from the backed up directories. Just about to load OBMM to recontrol the load odder. Any thought on the ESMs - the one I moved was CM Partners.esm, it was in front of Oblivion.esm. I know they load by date. I am tempted to leave them alone now but the order concerns me, I might try to contact Blackie and see if that is deliberate. MilesN
bben46
CM Parters was the same esm I moved. Evidentially it needs to be before Oblivion.esm for some reason. I f you learn anything let me know.
milesn
CM Parters was the same esm I moved. Evidentially it needs to be before Oblivion.esm for some reason. I f you learn anything let me know.Thats very interesting, I emailed Blackie and he said he makes a point of time stamping CM Partners after oblivion.esm I was using CM Partners 1.6 pack from Divine Avenger, I am still in re build mode I could put in in next and see if it reloads and places it in the same place. Curiouser and curiouser said Alice to the rabbit.

bben46
I'm locking this as the info is old and out of date. Go here for a working procedure to uninstall and reinstall Oblivion properly. Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the WIKI section of the Nexushttp://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Oblivion_reinstall_procedure It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.
