Updating Mods

This is my first time using mods. I am using the NMM and I have a mod that has a newer version available. I was wondering exactly how I need to update the mod. Do I delete the old mod and download the new one or do I just download the new one and it will overwrite the old one?

Generally if updating a mod requires you to uninstall the previous version, it will be documented either on the mod's description page, or in the update's readme. However, if you choose to err on the side of caution to avoid potentially damaging your game save, the correct procedure would be to uninstall and verify that all resources of a mod are deleted, load Skyrim and make a new save without that mod installed, install the updated version of the mod. This type of save game corruption is usually caused by larger mods running multiple scripts. In Oblivion, at least, weather mods were known for this and all of them had a detailed uninstallation/update process. Realism mods that added new possibilities to the game also had the potential to cause this, and it was almost always noted somewhere. Simple mods like texture replacers don't have anything that could potentially be saved into your game and therefore it's entirely unnecessary to follow this procedure for them. As mods involving SKSE and (soon) the CK start rolling out, we may see more and more potentially hazardous to uninstall/update mods, but as of now I'm not aware of a single mod that has been known to cause save game corruption. I think he's asking (I'm wondering this too) how to update mods THROUGH the mod manager.

NMM webpage reads:

... allows you to download, install, update and manage your mods through an easy to use interface.

The problem is, there is no obvious "Update Mod" button that I have found. When I go the a mod's webpage and click the 'Download with Nexus Mod Manager' button for the new version, it just adds another entry for the mod in NMM and doesn't delete the old one.

One time when I launched NMM, I got a prompt to update a mod because it said it was out of date but I have no idea how to do that again and for other mods.

There really should be an obvious "UPDATE THIS MOD" button out in the open.
