Creating Standalone Items

VIII

Recommended Posts

Here's the scoop, I've been using the Nexus for mods and whatnot for some time, for everything since Morrowind basically. I've finally taken the gumption to try again and make my own stuff, and I started with recolors quick and dirty for myself to enjoy. Problem is now I would like to turn these recolors of vanilla items into new craftable items so they no longer overwrite the vanilla textures.

Using the popular tutorial here I've figured out the recipe bit BUT, I have not been able to find (on my own) how to give this item a hex code and make it refer properly to the appropriate texture and mesh. I've googled, I've wikied, I've forumed, but I just can't seem to find the answer to this presumably simple and pure newb question. Maybe it's my assortment of terminology I've rifled through in searching...

C'est la vie.

Any help would be much appreciated, and who knows, maybe once I get better at all of this I can actually share some of the resources I create. One hand washes the other, yes?

Thanks.

I personally find the best way to learn plugin work is to take a mod that does what you'd like to learn and tear it apart. For your particular project I'd recommend using AeonVita's Dragonbone Weapons as a reference. It uses the mesh for Orcish weapons with textures he created himself, adds them to the game as unique items so it doesn't replace Orcish weapons, and makes them craftable. Everything you need to know is contained in his plugin save for one little thing regarding the file path for textures that you can checkout with NifSkope. Step by step, you'd copy and rename the mesh for your item, change it's texture path(s) in NifSkope, copy and paste some information from Skyrim.esm to your own plugin in SkyEdit (or TESsnip if you're a hex kind 'o guy), alter a few values and viola!

Well, thanks for the quick reply. I've been trying to disassemble and digest all I can from other mods and to some extent it is helpful, but at the same time, it leaves me pulling out quite a bit of hair and smoking too many cigarettes. I haven't used SkyEdit before and maybe that will seem less confusing. I'll be trying that straightaway.

Although, if someone has another point of view or method, I'm open to all.

Thanks again.

One of the keys to this is getting a mod that only does what you'd like to learn. Otherwise, you're stuck digging through a ton of useless information.
