Windhelm CTD!

Hey! I tried to walk in Windhelm from the stables near the city gate. I have open cities mod, as soon as I try to get in the city the game crashes to desktop without any freeze. I have many mods installed, but I can't figure out the solution. In Nexus Mod Manager I deactivated all the plugins and mods and played just vanilla with expansion and everything went fine. I reactivated the mods and it worked fine (Except I lost my race, weapons, armours ecc.) but then it crashed again. Wtf is going on? Thank you!

ps. Even with fast travel doesn't work. I don't even know how to post my mods here to show you if something could be in conflict, how can I do that?

1. Anytime you move or delete mods, it can cause CTDs in your game whenever the scripts are attempted to be accessed. You should try this out on a new save.

2. If you are using LOOT to sort your mods, navigate to the 3 dots in the upper right, click, and then select "Copy Load Order". Then paste that information here.

Here's the list, thank you for your suggestion! The fact is that the crashed before I tried to remove the mods. I then removed them, played vanilla and it didn't crash, obviously. Wich mod could be causing conflict?

1. It should be like this order in your plugins tab:
Skyrim
Update
Dawnguard
Hearthfires
Dragonborn
Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch (get rid of your USKP)

3. A lot of people have crashes in Windhelm with the Open Cities mod for some reason. Perhaps it is because there are patches they don't know about or something. I've never used the mod, but I see this problem all the time with that mod being installed.

4. You have Open Cities and Immersive Whiterun. While I'm sure both are great mods, since you are having crashes in Whiterun, I'd say one or both of these are likely your culprit. I would lean more toward Open Cities as he says himself it has had issues in the newest skyrim on his page. While I'm sure you are using an skse.ini like he suggested, if not, I would get it...it helps with ctds. You can download the SKSE.ini for lazy users from the nexus and it does it all for you :P

5. Be careful when having multiple texture mods overlaping each other. It's always best to just stick to one mod that edits your cities and then focus on one type of mod that affects the other aspects of your game until you know what you are doing.

6. Ensure that Apocalypse and Magic duels work okay together.

7. If you get USLEEP, which you should, note that your Racecompatibility has a uskp override. There may be various mods you must reinstall and in the FOMOD (installer) you need to select Legendary instead of USKP (Unofficial skyrim patch)

Thank you so much, you've been so kind! :D I do not have crashes in Whiterun tho, but i'll try to deactivate open cities and see what happens. So, in a brief summary, what mods should I deactivate or substitute? I do have Skse Ini for lazy users, I think. What's USLEEP and Fomod? Sorry for my English btw, I'm Italian! :D Thank you so much again!

  • 8 months later...

For me I had to reinstall 'Enhanced Light and FX' without the optional "Exteriors" check marked.

Just to be sure I tested again several times and the results were always the same: If I installed ELFX with the Exteriors option = CTD at Windhelm every time. And if I installed ELFX without the Exteriors option = Zero crashes, no problem entering Windhelm no matter how many times I tried it always worked perfectly. I tested over and over and can confirm this was the culprit in my case. Hope that helps somebody.
