Problems with Reinstallation of Oblivion

Recommended Posts

Hello, after doing some tweaking and modding, mostly with what was suggested in http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?CIID=36546 i ran in to some graphical errors(mainly having all the floor going pink), since i couldnt solve the issue, i decided to uninstal the game and reinstall it. I have been unable to reinstall it since then, because i get stuck in the first "bar" of the setup installation, no error message is received the instalation just apparently freezes on the first "bar".

As anyone experienced something similar or has a solution to this issue? If someone would be able to give me some feedback i would be thankfull.

Nothing ‘exactly’ like that, but I do have a certain problem concerning the Oblivion CD… sometimes my PC won’t register the CD as in the drive and it says upon start up “place Oblivion CD in drive”.

I check “my computer” and sure enough there is no “icon” for the CD. When I try to eject, it just flashes for about four minutes and then gets ‘stuck’ (ie won’t eject at all).

The only way I can solve this, is to ‘force’ the CD tray to eject by pushing a small metallic rod into the hole all CD-ROMs have on their front port. I’m thinking my ROM drive is slowly failing.

So maybe this is your issue? Some formats are having trouble loading now because of the age of your CD-ROM drive? And with the relative cheapness of drives these days, try getting a new drive and see if this solves your issue.

xenxander: try cleaning your drive. those things collect dust over time and it jams the mechanism. usually you can blow the dust out with low pressure air. Be sure to turn off the power and unplug the computer first. If that doesn't work, CD-ROM drives are cheap. I just replaced one for a friend, She paid $24 US for a fairly good one.

Zephrim: the uninstall Oblivion option on the CD doesn't really uninstall it. So when you try to reinstall, there are still parts of your old install there.

To completely uninstall check this thread: http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=41082

To keep your mods, before uninstalling you need to rename your C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data to something else, such as \olddata

Then to keep your saves rename C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion to something like \OldOblivion. This will preserve your .ini settings also.

Then after uninstalling and reinstalling, Before installing any patches or mods, start the game and make a save. This initializes some things. Then if you have it, install it, start the game and make another save. then install the latest patch

For patches you must use the one for your game language. If you have SI, ONLY use the latest SI patch, not the Oblivion patch. If you do not have SI, Only use the latest Oblivion patch.

Then after you are satisfied that Oblivion is working properly - no pink floors, rename the \oldoblivion and \olddata back to their original names.

The pink floor is caused by a missing mesh, probably caused by a mod. If it is still there after you reinstall, then start eliminating mods until it works.

Hope this helps.
