SKYRIM ON SALE AT STEAM

Pretty surprised Steam would put such a new (and popular) game on discount...

You can always backup the installation files and if you backup after every (big) update, you don't even need to re-download them - unlike hard copies, but this is a Steam game so hard copy or not everyone have the option to backup to HDD. :P

Hard copy always so incase my cpu goes kerplunk, I have still the game itself.

I know, I've had to buy my entire Steam game inventory all over again three times thanks to my computer rebuilds.

Oh no wait, what on Earth are you smoking?

WELL, rebuild my computer and my 2 sons computers once a years to get that new computer speed again. added a solid state Intel 320 drive a couple of months ago.

AND LOVE STEAM, all I do is install steam, log in and it installs all itself.

BTW, I do not work for them LOL

bought 3 times, come on!!! no stores to buy hard copies around you??? or masochist???

Steam is always running incentives. I love steam and have been using it for years. My only complaint is the auto-update settings do not work properly. Other than that I back up all original files on my machine in a separate game folder so I can make changes as needed myself in regards to patches.

I don't get the "I hate steam" crowd, but I'm also not overly paranoid about most things. Block ports or whatever else you want to do, but what does it matter that you went online to download a digital copy of a game that you then only play in "offline" mode. I personally enjoy a few multiplayer games like the Total War series, or BFBC2 and have circles of friends I play with either of those games, so online mode is perfectly fine.

In fact a friend and I were discussing our initial experiences of Skyrim and exchanging notes on via steam messenger during the initial release.

I've rebuilt a few machines and have my steam library on a few of my computers and have never had any issues with purchases or downloads. I've added my other games to my steam library so I don't need to worry about physical media anymore. I'm a big fan of digital; its no surprise I hate paper/receipts and hard copies of other things as well. Its the same with my iphone and ipad or other devices, wireless cable boxes, etc.

The market clearly responded well to this sort of thing; hence their launch decision; I know at least 20 guys in their 30's on my friends list who love steam.

"I hate Steam" crowd mostly complains about 1) their (Steam) game needing Steam to be running in the background (no choice), 2) after installation, regardless of hard copy or not, the game requires online activation, 3) the inability to turn off auto-update and 4) when an update starts, the game is stuck and cannot be played until you completely finish downloading the patch.

You're mistaken about the part where they purchase online only to play offline, a good chunk of these people do not buy their games online, that's why they're complaining about being forced to use Steam and it's a double face-slap when it's a Single Player only game (Skyrim, etc.). They are not complaining about Steam online services being inadequate - they just don't use, need or want it. Adding to that, Steam's faulty auto-update, as you've mentioned. Updates breaking mods, forced new patch causing games to fail, all of it can be avoided if the "turn off auto-update" actually works. There's also the choice of staying offline, but that's a terrible workaround if you have other games - especially multiplayer games.

It never hurts to be at least a little bit cautious when the industry wants access to your rig. Same goes for facebook and social networking. In this time and age, one should at least demand a little privacy and not be forced to drop one's pants only to play a game.

I follow you but the other guy...no. I do many computer rebuilds when my PC begins to become sluggish for more modern games. All I need to do is install steam and login to my account...all games ready to go. Why did that guy have to re-buy all the games? Sounds odd if you ask me...Seeing as you have a license to use all of the games on steam you have purchased for life...
