The Reach and the city Riften is killing my framerate

Hi there.

 

Even without mods, those two locations always force back my FPS counter to stable 30 frames per second. Entering the city is equal with playing on a console.

 

I can play Battlefield 1 on Ultra and all the latest games work like a clockwork, so I'm scratching my head over here, because I can't do anything against it and lowering my settings is NO option, because any other places in Sykrim work perfectly fine, even with mods.

Hi Shaundi7, thank you for sharing!

 

Also, thank you for giving ahead the mod list you use. Furthermore I'll have to see your PC specs (especially CPU, RAM and GPU). In case you're not sure how to do that (I'm certain you know, but I'm just making sure myself) Win+R (windows key, the button with windows logo on it) and then type in DXDIAG and run. At the window, choose to export a save as a file, and post here what's in there.

 

Now I get ya - you say you don't wanna lower the settings (me too- if it works one way, it will work the other) so let's see what we can do. It seems that some of the FPS drops in the game are caused by the V-Sync\Vertical Refresh. There are two ways about to solve it.

 

If you own a NVidia GPU, try this guide.

 

If you own an AMD GPU, try my guide.

 

If still no changes appear, keep us posted and we'll see what we can do. I can tell you that I tried myself today to enter the wander around the Rift and it was fine to me (55-65 FPS). I'll try going to the Reach (and also enter both cities: Markarth and Riften) and update you about any changes myself.

Yeah OK that is better than even what I have.

 

In the meanwhile I tried going to both Riftrn (and the rift) and Markarth (and the reach). It seems that to me both places run smooth.

 

So my bet is V-sync. Because it's NVidia I'll do my best to help (since it's not what I use). Try using the guide, and I hope that will sort it out for you.

 

If it still low in those places, I'm long-shooting right now - try to disable mods that has something to do with cities (such as open cities though I don't think you have that one, and populated places etc.) My guess is that it won't do a nudge, but I must deduce.

Try using Skyrim Performance Monitor to see if is a hardware issue.

 

I have not added texture mods mods yet & I am averaging 4.3 vram & maxing at 4.8 in that area. If your 970 is running over 86% GPU usage all the time your frame rate will drop. 67% usage is good for 60+fps.

 

The more CPU usage the lower the frame rate. Your i7 should average 18 to 23% usage. At 94% usage your frame rate will be around 5fps.

 

I will asume that your resolution is 1080. A GTX 970 is a poor performer at higher resolutions.

 

Low frame rate can get into a save. It happened to me twice in the old Skyrim. Test with another character save.

 

A modded Skyrim puts much more stress on a system than a Battlefield game. I really don't know any game that come close except for a heavaly modded Fallout 4.
