CTD -- Load Order issue?

Hi there

I used to mod a lot and my mods all worked together really well, then I didn't play F04 for ages and suddenly there's this new patch and NMM got a new patch which screwed up my plugins. It gave me a bunch of plugins for mods but they weren't in the 'mods' section, and didn't work in-game. So I removed them and started re-modding. Now after getting at least 78 new mods I decided it's time to start playing, or at least trying....

Starting up the game is fine, I can get to the main menu and do whatever. But then if I want to start a new game it crashes to the desktop with a 'Fallout 4 has stopped responding' error.

A lot of the mods I have are ones I used to have, apart from that most are just clothing mods. I've been messing with the load order to see if it's slightly improving at all but I just can't get my head around all of this.

I'm not sure where patches for things should go...for example: should Valdacil's Chem Redux patch go after or before the Chem Redux mod? Are my mods just conflicted? If so how do I find out which ones work and how do I do it efficiently?

Please help me out, I'd appreciate it if you could go through my load order and let me know if things seem fishy. If you're unsure about the load order, how can I go about making it work/figuring out what works?

I already tried verifying the game's cache, I tried re-loading an old save, I tried disabling all my mods and starting a new game. What else could I possibly do? I guess I'll try re-installing the game or something, but if that doesn't work I have no idea what will.

I would suggest running LOOT on that list to start with, it's a bit of a mess. http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/5310/?

Any time there is a 3rd party patch to a mod, the patch should go after the mod it's patching. So VIS-PatchChemRedux goes after chem redux.

Next it looks like you're running all 5 versions of SuitDreams, you're supposed to pick one according to the mod description page.

It looks like you're mixing and matching different Settlement Keyword variants and they're not compatible. Settlement Keywords and Settlement Keywords Expanded are completely different mods. It looks like the only two mods you're using that use an SK variant are Homemaker and OCDecorator. Read both mod pages and all sticky posts *very* carefully to make sure you get the correct SK patch that works with both and download the version of each mod that is compatible with the other. The original Settlement Keywords mod hasn't been supported in a very long time. Settlement Keywords Expanded is still being supported and both Homemaker and OCDecorator use that version. So clear out old patches for the wrong version.

Finally, you might want to hold off a little while on using both Homemaker and OCDecorator anyway as both are in the process of some really significant updates.

I got LOOT, ran it and it said the issues I had was with Homemaker like you said. It's Incompatible with Fallout 4 patch 1.5.157+

and it needs SK when I want SKE. So I'm not using SK anymore, I'm using SKE (which is the 3rd thing in my Load Order)

the issue was I had some things with SK patches and it got me confused cause I thought the patches were the same thing

just some people didn't say extended or whatever, why do they have to have such common names :pinch:

(BTW the whole thing with Suitdreams: I knew that you only needed to apply 1, the rest I just had at the bottom disabled, sorry I should've mentioned that!)

Anyway, I disabled and uninstalled Homemaker and its patch but the plugins still show up in my plugins menu, I've tried manually deleting

it by going into the plugins file but it just won't do it. Is it important that I get rid of Homemaker+Patch when it's already disabled?

And apart from LOOT discovering issues with Homemaker it says everything else is fine. Yet the game still crashes and I reinstalled the game already...

Any other ideas :S? Thank you so much for your help!

Out of curiosity, you wrote "It's Incompatible with Fallout 4 patch 1.5.157+", are you running a really old version of Homemaker or a really old version of the game itself? It's been months since I checked, but last I checked all the pirated versions of the game stopped at FO4 1.5.157x. If you admit to running a pirated copy you're going to get banned from this site and frankly I can't really support you on any problems you're having even if it weren't against the site rules or due to moral issues, but simply because it's just too hard to fix pirated copy problems since you can't do basic troubleshooting things like verifying steam cache. Not to mention god only knows what some pirate team with even fewer ethics than other pirate teams have done to change the game in malicious or simply ignorant ways. Edited to also add: Many of the more complex mods are now no longer compatible with versions 1.5.157x or older anyway because there were really significant changes made to Fallout in patches after that.

Now if the problem is that you're using a really old copy of Homemaker, I suggest completely uninstalling Homemaker, OCDecorator, all SK mods and patches related to all three programs, then carefully reading the mod description pages *and* all sticky comments for both Homemaker and SKE to check which files you need and getting the current versions. You say they're not uninstalling (I assume NMM isn't uninstalling them correctly), in that case you'll probably need to manually uninstall them which means going to the data folder and removing all the files related to them yourself, as well as editing the plugins text, and even then NMM has other files it uses to track which files need to be removed during uninstall so NMM may still think you have it. If that's the case, you may be forced to uninstall NMM, reinstall NMM and then reinstall your mods again. If you end up doing that, backup your plugins.txt so you remember which mods to reinstall and in which order so your save games will still work if you are trying to save them.

Edited to add: directions on manual uninstalling here: http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Fallout_4_Mod_Installation

Whoa whoa whoa, of course I'm not using a Pirated Version, I bought the game when it was first released because I love the Fallout series.

My homemaker is the latest (1.41) the mod page says it's compatible with Fallout "1.7.9 or greater."

And my F04 is version 1.8.7.0.0

My F4SE is the latest and greatest version

I went through all my mods, read the stickies, got necessary patches for them, still crashes regardless.

I removed all SKE things

and I tried manually removing plugins of Homemaker but they just won't go away,

every time I get rid of it, the next time I open the plugins.txt it appears again and is never permanently gone.
I guess NMM is doing it because of the Backup file?

I disabled EVERYTHING to do with settlements and settlement building, I got rid of SKE&OCD. Still not working,

Tried Verifying Game Cache and running the game to see if it worked, no dice. Also, before I came to the forums

for help I already had tried to uninstall and reinstall but when that happens for some reason it doesn't completely uninstall

NMM :S

Besides, I've already tried running the game with NO mods and it still didn't work, but I'll retry Uninstalling to see if it works

hopefully.

Thanks! I'll get back to you in a bit and let you know if it worked or not.

I didn't think you meant you were running a pirated version, but the comment was not fully clear so I thought I'd clarify. I hope I didn't offend, that certainly wasn't my intent!

As for NMM, if you're using the latest open beta version...well it's buggy as h@##. You may need to manually hunt down all its files and nuke NMM itself from orbit manually if a normal progam uninstall doesn't work. And to be perfectly honest, I still haven't figured out the install locations of all its files and how it's tracking things behind the scenes.

Edited to add: Make sure the version of F4SE you're running is compatible with the current game version. If not, that will cause immediate CTD on load. F4SE is always a version behind for a few days after a Bethesda patch update. The F4SE and game versions must always match exactly, even .0001 differences in version will not work.

If you uninstalled all mods, then uninstalled NMM, you might still have a few leftover mod files and/or plugins.txt might have not been updated. I wrote a post on a different thread earlier tonight that discusses what files to delete/not delete to make a reinstall experience a little less painful. https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5087710-game-keeps-crashing/page-2&do=findComment&comment=44826700

Hiya, thanks for the help so far...

I went through your steps on the other forum topic and uninstalled F04, re-installed it then deleted all traces

of mods within the Data folder. I open up F04 and click 'start new game'. For the first time it doesn't say 'mods are loaded'

so I think "ok, this is a great sign!"

nek minnut :(

doesn't work still!! Have we just exhausted all options or is everything borked?

Well actually, you should have deleted all traces of mods within the data folder and then verified steam files which would essentially reinstall anything missing from FO4. So if you completely reinstalled all of FO4 first, then followed my instructions on clearing out mod files (and some Fo4 files), you essentially did way more work (and downloading) than necessary and then undid some of that extra work.

At this point, I'd just nuke your installation of NMM from orbit using your Windows Programs uninstall utility. Also go to "%LocalAppData%/Fallout4" by typing that (minus the " marks) into your file explorer and delete all the files located there. I've used several different mod managers so I'm no longer positive which ones are NMM specific to give you file names. But you'll see file names like plugins.txt and plugins.nmm.bak etc. Run one last steam verify on your game files. Then, run the default vanilla game from it's own launcher at least once. This will recreate your plugins.txt and any missing ini files. It's probably best to start a new game and play long enough to get out of the vault. Once you've made it to Sanctuary and have activated the workshop there you can save your game, quit, and begin the modding part. THEN you can safely reinstall NMM from scratch and start installing your mods. Run NMM as administrator to hopefully bypass the bugs that the new NMM has regarding properly activating mods. I would install no more than 2-5 mods at a time, load your save game and see if the mods seem to be working-those that you can test at that stage anyway, at the least you'll be able to quickly narrow down any mods which are preventing you from opening a game. After testing the few you installed, exit fully to desktop before installing the next batch, test, rinse, repeat Save anything that requires F4SE for last.
