Is it "cleared" or not??

Like the title says, this has been bugging me for some time now.

1) I have areas that are "cleared" where I have done a quest (usually a Word Wall) and they stay empty.

2) I have areas where I have quested -- Morvath's Lair is a prime example -- and it never lists as "cleared", does restock, and will even respawn Morvath.

3) I have areas where I have mopped the place clean that aren't quest-related (a couple forts and caves come to mind) -- unless they are saved for Radiant use somehow -- and they never list "cleared" and never respawn anything. I think Fellhammer is one, or a fort near it.

4) And finally, I have places listed as "cleared" and I go in and it's restocked with baddies all over, like I'd never been there. Yet, it says it's "cleared."

What gives? Anyone got a clue to this "logic?"

Well it only applies to dungeons, caves and temples, and I'm pretty sure it just means that you've already gone through the entire passageway. I've re-entered "cleared" locations to find more enemies and items that were not there before. So yeah, it just means that you've already been there I guess...

This is simply not the case for me. Morvath's Lair is a cave yet it will never clear, does not have multiple sections to it, and I'm certain I've gotten everyone via the Aura Shout. A week or so later, it will restock (Morvath included) with vampires and thralls. This is after I helped the townies nearby with the Morvath-related quest, too. It's just that, when it restocks, the girl is absent and so is the one guy in the beginning that is digging the hole. It never "clears."

This isn't the only place I'm seeing this either (I have Groves and Grottos and Giant Camps that are "cleared" btw) ... Morvath's Lair is just what comes to mind, as I am not at my home atm.

I have gotten the impression that the trigger to make places "Cleared" is either killing all the bad guys, or else killing the boss. But like you guys say, there are places which simply never seem to clear, even though they are dungeons. I suspect that maybe those only clear when the quest relating to them is successfully finished.

I think the system is kind of goofy and annoying. I enjoy seeing things marked as cleared, but wish it was more reliable.

Cleared seems to mean you have beaten it once, but is sounds like all the enemies respawn. Maybe they need a different word than "Cleared." Maybe the word should be "Explored."

I am eager for the Construction Kit to come out. I want to see exactly what triggers "Cleared." I have thought about building a mod that adds secondary triggers or changes the triggers so that you can get any dungeon marked by doing a certain action such as killing the boss, opening the final treasure chest, or reaching the final room or tunnel (triggering a trigger box in the deepest part of the dungeon where the boss or final treasure chest would be.)

as far as i know the section becomes labeled as cleared 1s you kill the leader of the band. whether it be a vampire or marauder or what ever. they will restock after about 4 game days with either the original occupants, there still classed as clear because you have already been there and killed the highest ranking NPC in that section. personally this isnt bothering me in the least as im unlikely to go back to a place 1s it has been cleared unless i have to for a second or third mission...

in fact this has an advantage, because i accidentally killed the guard in windhelm that asked me to find a murderer. i was told to talk to the 3 witnesses and report back to him. but some idiot npc attacked me, causing the guard to attack me, both died and i carried on his quest. after interviewing the witnesses i saw the marker for the guard only to find him dead... so i just left it...

i went back a few days later and the scene replayed. the guard again asked for my help but this time i was able to give it... problem is the murderer is now in my house and is none kill'able... he wont talk to me he just attacks and after i fend him off he just goes into the hidden room and stands there... so that quest line has fully bugged out. but the spawning does give you the opportunity to to have a go at some quests you may have made a mistake in...

i think it only bugged out on me because i bought the house b4 the murderer was caught.

Some places are bugged, and won't clear properly - like Movarth's Lair and Avanchnzel.. Some places require you to kill the bandit boss in order for the place to properly "clear" (which is followed by a certain sound that let's you know that you've "cleared" the area, although sometimes a place won't clear properly for one reason or another). Sometimes, you need to clear a place before a quest starts, since the antagonists in the quest will not be there because the quest will replace the area - like Glenmoril Coven and Bloated Man's Grotto.

For places that are supposed to "clear" properly but don't, I suppose you could restart prior to entering the ruin. I ran into the problem with the Snow Veil Sanctum not "clearing" properly.

They explained this before they released the game. As I recall, until you clear a dungeon, the mobs are levelled according to PC experience. Once the dungeon's been "cleared" (ie. all mobs killed), the mobs will still eventually respawn, but they'll be locked to the level of experience you were at when you first emptied it out.
