Oblivion style level up/Slower leveling

I recently leveled up and realised I had to jump from level 3 to level 6 in one go. There is no option to back out of the menu and do the next level up later on.

My worry with this is that I will miss low level items and enemies early in the game. In Oblivion I used to go a few days and only level up once, even though I had enough XP to level up multiple times more.

So, is there a mod that basically allows me to back out of the menu where I select Health, Magicka, Stamina ? I just want to do one level at a time.

Bump.

Level 15 now and I've only done missions from riverwood and whiterun. Around 25hours in.

I know enemies and items stop levelling with me at level 50, at this rate I could hit the level cap of 100 when I'm just halfway through the game, I'm a completionist.

I've seen the community uncapper and some other mods, could I install that halfway through my game with no problems? Don't want to ruin my save.

Thanks.

You can install it any time that you want. You can configure it's settings any time, and have them immediately take effect. It's the most powerful and configurable option available for leveling, so it's a good choice. It's a SKSE dll, so it won't take a slot in your load order, either.

The config (ini) file is fairly complex, so you might want to look at a guide. There are a few ready made configs on the nexus if you search for "uncapper".

Thanks for your reply.

I have the uncapper and currently have the ini file open ready to make changes. I have copied and pasted and saved all the original settings incase I balls this up.

All I want to do is level up slower so if I set each skill to level up slower would that work ? Because I only gain a character level up when one of my skills levels up ? Is that right ?

So for example I use lots of different skills in game and each skill setting is 1 by default. If I change every single skill setting to something like 0.5 then I'm going to level up at half the speed than the vanilla settings ?

Yes. It gives you a lot of options so you can precisely control it, but just reducing the skills will work fine.

You can also optionally do something like this:

[skillExpGainMults\Alchemy]
1=3.0
16=2.0
31=1.0

This would tell the Uncapper to level you up 3x faster (than the [skillExpGainMults] fAlchemy setting) from skill level 1 - 16, then 2x faster for skill levels 16 - 31, then 1x for everything greater than 31.

I have it set like this so I level fast at the start, then get progressively slower. My fAlchemy setting is 0.75, so 1x in this case actually means 3/4 vanilla speed. I tend to have restartitus, so I give myself an early boost to compensate for replaying early levels over and over.

But you can just change the variables in the [skillExpGainMults] and you'll get across the board slower leveling.

Ok I'll make those changes later, thanks.

I'm 30hours in but I play extremely slowly so I've only done whiterun and riverwood and their side quests. I'm estimating the game could take me 250-300hours to complete.

With levelled enemies and items stopping at level 50 I'd like to be around level 60-70 by the end of the game.

I suppose it's difficult to judge but do you think skill values of 0.5 would slow me down enough? Currently 25-30 hours in at level 17. 0.5 looks about right to me.

I haven't done a completionist style playthrough in a couple of years, so to be honest, I'm not sure.

I'd be tempted to drop skills to around 0.4 or so, but it depends on how completionist you are. If you're planning on doing (nearly) every quest, you can afford to be aggressive with your settings--you can set them pretty low. I usually play slow, but I also skip entire quest lines. So I do mage quests with one character, companion guild quests with another, etc. For that, I have most skill XP around the 0.6 - 0.8 range, with the goal of only maxing out a few skills by the end of the game. This is because I hate to hit the ceiling in a skill and still have a lot left to do. It's just personal taste (and I generally allow skills to go up to 120 or 130 with the Uncapper).

Also, this will depend on your playstyle, but I've found that I tweak certain skills like 1H, 2H, and smithing down more than others in order to try to get them to level a little more evenly. Otherwise, you'll max out the skills you use most super fast. Again, this is just to taste, and it varies a little character to character.

Does levelling skills slower mean that my player level also increases slower though?

Example. When lockpicking last night my lockpicking skill was increasing slower but each pick attempt seemed to increase my player level at around the same speed as vanilla. So I could end up with lower skill levels but same as vanilla player level, and it's player level that I'm most concerned with. I'm already level 18 and I've done hardly anything.

EDIT. Each time I pick a lock or attempt to but the pick breaks my lockpick skill goes up slightly less than vanilla because of the changes I made. But each attempt raises my player level bar possibly by the same amount as vanilla so I'm getting through the levels at the same speed. I might need to change something else aswell.

I'll check that guide again tonight.
