vampirefaeries
OK, since noone will answer you, I will try. I really needed help a few weeks ago and nobody would answer. They called me Noob and all that crap or "read the 'read me' file" which I do, but they didn't make a whole lot of since to someone like me and it really sucked. I understand the "read me" files better now. They are very important. Try this: Make sure that you have a program that can open these files. I use Winrar, you can download a free trial online. It covers both zip & rar files (and a bunch of others that I don't understand also). So if the computer says it cannot open this file, "would you like to choose a program or have your browser find one online?" let it find one for you. As I said I like Winrar. After you install your Winrar, you can download the mod. When you try to download the mod it will give you a choice, either open or save. (you don't "run" it because its not a program, its a file). I choose "save" and it will open a box for you to choose where to save the file to, I choose Desktop. Once it is downloaded, double click it. It opens up the Winrar Program. You will see your download in the program. Click it until you see the "read me" file, double click it and READ it. There may be special instructions for installing that particular mod. If it just says "Extract to Oblivion Data Folder" then do this: Close the "Read Me" box. Then back up to the where you were and highlight the whole mod. Click the "extract" choice up top, it will show maybe your computer, Documents, some others and your C:/ drive, click the C:/ and then click program files, then click Bethesda Softworks, then click Oblivion, then click data and hit enter and it will put it there "Programfiles/Bethesda/Oblivion/data." Once you are done, just be sure that the esp file is in the data folder, if so, then everything probably dispersed into the proper folders. Good modders make it simple for us. Now, open the Oblivion launch box click on "Data Files", you will see the Oblivion, Shivering Isles and the Knights of the Nine esp files on the left hand side. Those should be checked, if not, check them. You should also see your new mod. If it is there, check it too. It should now be active in your game. The right side will sometimes show a description of the file. This works for me, I hope it does for you. Do yourself a favor before you go downloading all of this stuff, you may want to create a restore point on your system in case all of this doesn't go as planned. You won't know where to go to find all of the files that you downloaded in case you need to get rid of it all. I hope that I have helped. I will check back to see if it worked. If anyone else sees anything here that I have said incorrectly, please come forward. This person needs help and that is what a forum is for. So come on everybody step up to the plate, it only takes a few minutes to send a little help. bben46
vampirefaeries gets a kudo for stepping up to the plate and giving a good explanation. I recommend the free 7-zip as the zip program to use as it is the one that most of the moddes use to compress their mod. Others tend to put certain files in the wrong places leading to weird effects. It is available here - http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15579 - just click on the highlighted part and it will take you there. The back arrow will return you to this point. For starting out with mods I recommend that you read this thread. http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=49995 there is a lot of useful information there as well as in the other pinned threads. Good luck and welcome to the Tesnexus.
