all right, im very new to thins whole 'computer gaming' genre on the long list of gaming consoles,

and although it may seem noobish (or newbish depending on the person) i am wondering if the reason i can only play oblivion on the lowest quality stems from the computer i am using.

this is not (unfortunately) the only question i will have.

the computers CPU clocks at 1.8 ghz (labeled at 2) and has 1.5 gigabytes of RAM.

the video card is a GeForce fx5200.

could anyone reccomend what to do to improve the quality, i at least want to play (god forbid) at the same graphics level as my 360, which i cannot do at this time. any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

if no one minds me slipping in aniother question, i have to ask, does the download "immersive Interface" (clicky for link) affect the preformance at all? and on top of that, if it does, where would i go searching to find it.

sorry for being such a nuisance on what (i think) are stupid questions. thanks for reading.

Easy question first, Immersive Interface does not affect the game performance in any noticable way, it just gets that huge ugly HUD out of the way.

Now the bad news. (From your specs) Your pc is severely underpowered to be playing Oblivion. I'm actually a little surprised that the game even boots up on that CPU, and your video card is much lower than the minimum requirements listed on the bottom of the game box. If you're just getting into pc gaming, the most important thing you should always do is read that little white label on the bottom of the games packaging box. That tells you if the game will run on your system.

What can be done to make your system play at the same graphics quality as the 360? Absolutely nothing. You need a much better video card and also a better CPU, which means you might also need a new motherboard and despite what the box says, 2gigs of ram is a must. You would in effect be building a new system.

holy crap, thats a very tall order, and if its really of any importance, it did just shut down on me recently. but could you recomend any components specifically (pardon the spelling) to help, by specifically (once again, sorry for the spelling) i mean like brands of different things (motherboard, video card, drivers, etc) to help the preformance.

but thanks for actually responding.

Processor isn't dual core - if it's only 1.8 GHz, I would imagine this isn't two physical CPUs. Without telling us exactly what your system specs are, we can't help you much in the way of suggesting what you need. Obviously your video card is much too underpowered for Oblivion, so that can be a starting point. I'd suggest looking this thread - you'll probably need it ;)

video card and processor are of the samre day and age i believe. maybe a dual core, but even with immersive interface its hard to get 'immersed' when you have to look at a block colored with crayone (also made out of blocks)

in other words, its really a nogo.

A 'Wall Mart' computer would probably be a little better, but not much. If you want the same - or better video quality its going to cost you - and cost a lot. Your best bet is to find a local geek who likes to build his own and get him (or her) to put together a custom box. But be sure to put a cap on how much you want to spend $5000 is not a lot for a good gaming computer - I have over $6000 in mine and its not top of the line any more. If you want to look at some pre built gaming systems look at web stores like Tigerdirect.com or Newegg.com. Note that most pre built systems do not include the monitor and you will need a good one, I recommend at least 20 inch wide screen and a minimum of 1440x900 resolution. And no matter how good your system is, it will still have an occasional crash when playing OblivionIt's an expensive hobby. Take you pick, an inexpensive stable boring game console with no capability for moding or customization. Or a more expensive PC that is fully customizable, capable of running business applications and thousands of non game programs as well as more thousands of mods, but tends to crash on games like Oblivion.

You can probably find an adequate system on line for less than $600, plus about another $220 for a decent monitor.

If you are outside the US there are comparable sites in most countries.

When you find one, post the specs here and the regulars will be happy to criticize it and tell you what they think you need.

Its an expensive hobby.

You don't need to spend any more than 600 to get a good pc. You can find lots of good deals on ebay. I bought our 4200 dual core with 250 gb hard drive and 1 gb ram for 300. But don't scrimp too much on the graphics card. Well, I bought my Radeon 1950 sapphire for 150, and it's a dream. So yeah, there's no need to spend thousands to get a good system.
