Geez... it's not like you're the only dragon I know

So... not like I'm one to point out huge gaping plot holes, but...

Assuming you don't kill Paarthurnax, why can't he fly you to Skuldafn? When it comes to flying high above the world, I'd rather be riding on Barney than Smaug. Why should I free the guy who just tried to kill me when I have a perfectly good dragon within shouting distance?

Paarthurnax has remained in seclusion at the throat of the world sense shortly after Alduin was cast into the time rift using the Elder Scroll and refuses to leave until Alduin is gone, as to his reasons for such no one really knows. My guess is fear because he betrayed his brother dragons and taught man how to use the Thu'um, thus aiding in there downfall. Edited by SaintAnon

Yeah, I wondered the same. But it is a big deal to get a hermit to finally venture out. Plus, I think you should only fly a dragon that you've captured or somehow broken in. It may otherwise be seen as a false show of honor and respect toward an unworthy human. If I were a dragon, that would be my rule. Dragons kind of seem that way, especially this one, who only came to you after a challenge even knowing you defeated his master, still wanted to experience your worthiness for himself, risking defeat just to see. I think you can take a risk for him too.

My big dis was not being able to experience flying a dragon. I was all excited to hop on, like in the Never Ending Story. Then, it's like, cut scene, and cutting one of the best scenes too.

Oldaviing is, for all intents and pruposes, loyal. You proved your superiority, and it is his nature to bow to that.

As for why Paarthunax didn't fly you there himself... Could it have something to do with the fact that Alduin knows Paarth betrayed him, and has probably told the dragons around Skuldafin to keep an eye out for our favorite elderly dragon?

Oldaviing's defection probably isn't known yet. Meaning he can get close without having to have a 'heated debate' with any other Dragons.

Heh, I also got flashbacks from the Never Ending Story.

Don't worry though, at least Beth was nice enough to give us the animations. I guarantee there will be a dragon-riding mod within 24 hours of the construction set being released.

Some good justifications, but I still see one reason as being the most likely: plot hole. ;)

I immediately thought of Paarthurnax, and thought, well that's crap! Also crap: not flying above Skyrim (come on Bethesda, you can't tease us with the line about experiencing life as a Dova and then...not let us experience life as a Dova!).

Im with galalic, it could be just bad writting lol (forgetting the fact that you already befriended another dragon that its probably the most powerful one after Alduin, or at least thats what he says).

But maybe has something to do with The Way of The Voice. He doesnt wants to interfere directly, only explaining stuff and telling you what you need to do, but thats it.

Anyway, didnt he said that he doesnt knows where Alduin's portal to Sovengarde its located? (wich would be weird, for being his second in command long ago, and its not like its a new portal since its very old, probably the only one)

Again, i really think that it has to do with the fact that Paarthunax is a known traitor. If Alduin didn't know he had switched sides before the encounter at the Throat of the World, he sure as hell does now. Theres no way Paarth would have been let within 10 klicks of that mountain valley. Oldaviing, on the other hand, is a fresh defector, and he's likely to be able to get close without drawing attention. Dragons are pretty big, i'm sure if the Dovahkiin crouches low no one would notice him unless they got really close.

That said, there does seem to be more than a touch of poor writing in the game, so i tend to suspect that we may just be rationalising shortcommings in the plot :P .

Its times like this i miss Kirkbride...

Not to derail this thread, but was anyone else disappointed that we didn't actually get to see the Dragonborn riding Oldaviing? Seriously, what a missed opportunity to get a good aerial view of Skyrim.

Edit: Oops. Missed Thespian's message. Lol.
