Fallout 4 crashing/freezing troubleshooting?

Hey, I've been trying to search on the web for something that could explain the crashing and freezes that occurs in my game. It usually occurs when i'm using a weapon trying to kill an enemy, when I kill a friendly NPC (usually a settler). Though not mutually exclusive to these things, it does happen more often than any other action in the game. What's funny is that I've been having considerably fewer problems with CTD (which seem to be a more frequent problem according to some users on here).

Why does this happen? My rig is decent, decent enough to play FO4 without shitty framerates, usually in urban areas the FPS could drop but not to the point that it's unplayable.

Sometimes the crashes/freezing resolves itself after couple of seconds and sometimes it has gone beyond saving and when I open up my Task Manager I see that the game's not responding. And it's funny because audio still plays in the BG even when freezing so it's kinda frustrating.

I'm not a technical guy but could someone explain why I'm getting crashes/freezes moreso than CTD?

Are your GPU drivers up to date ? A couple of nights ago I got 3 CTDs and one freeze within about an hour. I downloaded the latest Nvidia driver and stopped getting the CTDs but got one freeze and just left it alone and it started moving again.
