Need a few pointers to get into modding

Hello, My new year's pledge is to get into modding. Okay, that sounds like it's doomed from the start - My GENERAL pledge is to get into modding (Yeah that'll work much better ;) ). Problem is, my only modding attempt, if you could even call it that, is waay back when I made a few levels for Half-Life with worldcraft and that's miles away from what I intend to do. So I have no clue where to start. I already searched on this side for some tutorials but I couldn't find any which are written for Skyrim. I also didn't have any luck with google. I guess that's because the creationkit isn't out yet but I already found mods where meshes are editeted even by first time modders. So I guess this is a good time as any to get started and learning some modding without the creationkit might give me a broader knowledge of it.

Although having no actual knowhow I do have some ideas what I wanna create to get started. Generally I'd like to modify armors to my liking which would include editing meshes, textures and maybe animations at a later stage.

My first idea would be to remove the leg and arm parts of the nightingale armor. Even if that's already done I think it's propably a good exercise to get started.

In the long run I plan to modify meshes and textures of the nightingale armor so it gets a detective like look to it while still retaining the look of an armor so it fits the setting.

Now, what I'd like is some suggestions for moddeling tools and other needed utilities I need to create the above mentioned, maybe some links to tutorials that would fit the stuff I'm trying to do and how to use these tools together so that a working skyrim mod comes out of it.

Thanks in advance for any help! And have a good one one today with whatever you're doing and a not so bad one tomorrow! :)

Don't be alarmed by how complex modding seems, once you get into the thick of it, its actually quite simple to do, and fun as well.

Tutorials that are aimed at Oblivion and Fallout are fine for use with Skyrim, they use the same programs and they haven't changed much.

If you want to focus on editing armour meshs, I'm going to point you to Blender. Its a free 3d modelling program thats been used for modding Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.

When you get down to texturing or retexturing, GIMP is a pretty good way to go, its essentially a free photoshop.

If you want to add more content to the game (Im talking about buildings, quests , different scripted stuff etc.) I can suggest you to read the tutorials of previous Creation Kit generation, the TES construction set for oblivion. It should give you basic knowladge about the creation kit, as I believe it will be quite similar to the one used for oblivion. It should be actually closer to the GECK which was used to create Fallout 3 and NV.

If you're interested in I can assist you with the studying of the CK. I'm searching for modders for my upcoming project, it can be a good exercise for you :)

Thank you both for the info and the encouragement. I'll get to it shortly. :)

To lv121: Thanks for the offer - that sounds great. First I want to do some short basic research on my own but first after that I'll get back to you. I actually already used the geck for simple modifications of armorratings and some mod bugfixing (sweet veronica mod) in new vegas and that was quite simple.

Today I installed blender and watched some very good beginner tutorials to get an understanding of it. I also installed gimp but didn't try anything with it but I guess that it won't be much of a problem. Next week I have a very uncertain schedule, though so I first need some certainty before I'm ready. I guess I can report back in a week, maybe earlier - just to give you an estimate. Until then I'll try to do a little research on my own each day. Also, I gotta say, that I didn't finish the mages quest, yet, because I went for a warrior/thief character first - just started that quest line, actually. But I think I could finish it in time.

Oh, and happy new year! :)

Hello,

I too would like to do some basic modding but i have no clue what programs are used to mod (if any!). I'm only looking to change/replace/add spells for the time being. Suggestions or link to an FAQ/Dummy Guide for this would be appreciated.

Go out and buy Oblivion/Fallout(3 or new vegas).

Use the Tool Sets for those as your training tool for the skyrim tool that will be released.

Play with the functions of the toolset, find out how to create new cells play with attributes figure out how to place doors and how to link them. etc etc.

There are tutorials for Fallout 3 that can help give a good leg up on the basic functionality of the toolset.
