abaris
2. Steam collects demographics and gains profit from those demographics by selling games and target advertisements for games. This could be useful for some however we are paying them to make profit of our demographics. I want a cut at least. 6. This sets an ongoing precedent for invasion of privacy and collecting of demographics as a normal routine of purchases. Again if they would open us the consumer to a cut of this collection of data as steam makes a lot of money doing nothing but collecting and storing maybe I would be less hostile towards the system in place. I took the liberty of quoting the 2 points that are the most important. Working in the corporate world since 1990 I know what can be done with the kind of data collected by users who think nothing of it. If you strip services like steam down to their core they're legal spyware. It's the same with facebook and all the little helpers on the internet. Does anyone really believe these services are offered for free? They're there because there's a whole lot of money involved. A whole lot of money earned by selling the collected data. Also, as has been said, there are other issues involved. Noone knows how the marriage of steam and the CK actually works. Chances are that mod creators lose the rights to their own creations, since there's additional money to be made.

ginnyfizz
I've heard of this issue before, but on the six computers I've had Steam on I've never encountered it. Maybe your doing wrong. I most certainly am not, and nor are the other knowledgeable and intelligent members of this community who are experiencing the issue. If we are clever enough to make, test and fix mods ourselves, we certainly know how to make Steam not update. It's known as taking it offline, that is the ONLY way to make it cease and desist. I'm giving my opinion. The entire topic is about Steam... what do you want me to do? Dance for them so it doesn't get locked...?
coreypikes
I honestly believe that Bethesda thinks highly of the modding community, and I just can't see them lowering themselves to the point of trying to make money off of others peoples hard work. And no, Valve (the guys who own Steam) don't pay me. I'm just a fan.

I honesly don't kow what to tell you. Have you tried installing Steam into someplace other than Program Files (x86)? I have mine installed under C/Games/Steam. egamar
Do [you] have a Facebook account? Gmail/Hotmail/Yahoo Mail? Do you use Internet Explorer? Do you own a cell phone? I know this wasn't asked of me, but: No. No, no and no. No. Yes, but it's turned off unless I need to use it. I don't use LinkedIn, an iPhone, Twatter, Flickr, splattr or splutter, except when Nurse fills my spoon too full. I get by just fine :) Yes, I hate Steam for its intrusiveness and because I would be compelled (up to a point) to use it. Of course, in the EU we are protected by good consumer and privacy legislation and we could always return the product if we didn't want to be spied upon (and no, the teeny tiny print in the licence agreement would not prevent that). Yes, Steam is intrusive, but do you remember the Vendor in DragonAge who tried to sell you on-line DLC for REAL money? Now THAT was an outrage. This is, sadly, the way of the world to come. We are losing the war against Stupid, and soon there will be no-one left who remembers how it once was, nor anyone who cares. Stupid will rule. Support the Refuseniks while we're still here .... Love and Peace

It might be a long needed reality check what a company actually is and what it isn't. If there's money to be made it will be made. They're not friends to invite over for some beer, they are responsible to their shareholders. And no, I'm not talking about Joe Developer. I'm talking about the people you don't see. But these are the people actually pulling the strings.
