Sorry if I didn't make this clear but by right side I meant which side the mod makers would pick because which ever side they pick is the side that gets the mods.

First, you don't have to choose one of the two sides - you can also stay neutral throughout the entire main quest line and game.

Second, I think what people were trying to point out is the following: neither imperial nor stormcloak is really right or wrong, neither side gives better benefits than the other, and the storyline and quests given by both sides are, well, not to put too fine a point on it, 'bleh'. So neither side is more interesting, complex, or appealing than the other. What this means, in practice, is that most people who play more than one playthrough (the majority of players) will play both sides at least once and probably neutral too. I would also imagine that this applies to mod makers as well. I don't think it likely that most mod makers will choose one side over the other in Skyrim. I could be wrong <shrug> but that's my opinion.

I currently have 7 characters, one went stormcloak, one imperial (just to see, and because it fitted with what they knew at the time) ... all the others are staying neutral. In fact, if I had to guess, I'd guess that more people will, in the end, play more neutral runs than anything else.

Its like being offered a choice between the Nazis and the Khmer Rouge, neither are very inspiring.

^^^This.

Honestly, I would have sided with the Thalmor, were it possible.

Same here, I made a high elf and realised I couldn't join the Thalmor, deleted him and haven't switched on Skyrim since lol

I joined the Imperials for two reasons: 1. Stromcloak armos look like crap whereas Imperial armos look ok and 2. Ulfric Stormcloak is just some random ball sack Jarl who wants more power and uses skyrims situation for his own benefit.....haha "ball sack" ...i like that word xD

I don't think there is a "right" side. There are flaws with both the Stormcloaks and the Imperial Legion, and both sides see the other very negatively (with accusations of racism being made against both sides). Ulfric and Tullius seem like well-meaning (if flawed) leaders, and I think the narrative really hammers home that, even if you side with one faction and oppose the other, your opponent isn't a villain.

I've done both, and I like how the writers handled it. I think it's good because the Stormcloaks and the Legion offer benefits for siding with them in spite of the problems both factions have. Neither side is so perfect that you'll consistently side with them over the other, and there are enough flaws with both factions to invite the player to see both sides. Good and bad Jarls, good and bad people, without either side being as bad as the Legion was (with all the choices you could make in New Vegas). I like that there isn't a "right choice" in Skyrim. I prefer that type of dichotomy, honestly.

Sorry if I didn't make this clear but by right side I meant which side the mod makers would pick because which ever side they pick is the side that gets the mods.

Sorry about the mistake, then. I tend to have two characters for both choices (as well as the different ways to handle the Daedric quests and similar quests), although I don't know if that's feasible for you.

I have played both since I started the game, but my initial choice was Stormcloaks. This was my first elderscrolls game so I did not know a lot of the backstory, and siding with the people who came real close to chopping my head off did not seem like a good idea. I wasn't even on the list! At the risk of going on tangent, it would have been nice to know how I landed in Imperial custody to begin with (maybe a "Return to Helgen" quest?)

When I later discovered that Vignar is bugged, and all suggestions to solve the problem failed (talking about "the Fallen" quest), I never sided with the Stormcloaks again. Politically speaking, the more I played the game the more I felt that Ulfric was wrong. Right now I don't get any of my newer characters involved in the civil war since it just does not seem right with a character that is neither Nord nor Imperial.

I think this is a good post. I am playing my first time through and was wondering which side, if any, to pick. I was unsure I wanted to join those that would just cut peoples heads off with no good reason. But I am not sure I want to join a group who are just acting like kids who did not get their own way either. I think I may choose neither since neither seems to really affect my characters life much. Thank you for the advice.

;-P

my main character was an Imperial and i wanted to side with the Imperial Legion in an effort to follow on with what happened in Hammerfell and get rid of the Thalmor. maybe too optimistic, right? ended up abandoning the whole effort. Edited by supafuzz
