Textures not rendering properly in-game?

Is there a reason that textures won't render properly in-game? I've modded an armour texture by enlarging the texture file to 2048 x 2048, and I took pains to increase the detail visible; but the details don't show in-game, and the texture still looks as blurry and undefined as it did before. Basically, my 2048 x 2048 texture looks like a vanilla 512 x 512.

I haven't fiddled with the correspondng _n file yet, but even so, I should at least be able to see the extra detail, even if it hasn't been painted into the _n file yet- right?

What do I need to do to make the detail in the texture appear in-game?

Are you sure its you're texture you are seeing , make a marker and test if it is your texture that shows up.

I'm absolutely sure the mod is loading. It does look different to the original, but the details that I've included just aren't showing like they should. It looks like a 512 x 512 when it shouldn't- it's not as sharp/definite as it should be.

Probably need a little more info, such as what compression and what program did you use to save the texture files?

What settings are you running the game at?

How are you checking the texture? 3rd person zooming, the inventory viewer or using the ' tfc ' console command?

I use Photoshop. I exported the texture in DXT1, 3 and 5. None of them look any crisper; 5 holds a bit more colour, but isn't any clearer.

Ultra. I've got everything set to max.

3rd person zooming, with fov at 30.

What Screen res are you running? The thing about .dds files is the "mips" .DDS files are almost like a .zip file the 'mips' are a down scaled version of the full image and because your graphics program does a way better job of scaling than a game engine ever could it's handy thing. The problem lies in the fact that depending on what resolution you are running and whether or not your running AF or TF on your video card, the game may decide it doesn't need or can't use the full 2k x 2k image and use one of the pre-sized, down scaled 'mips' instead.

You were right. Pre-patch Skyrim was laggy so I had to set the video card for performance instead of quality. This lowered the setting for mip maps as well. Patches fixed the lagging, but I forgot to reset the video card. Thanks. I honestly would never have thought to look there. Kudos to you.
