Heavy archer

So, was just wondering about this setup:

Archery

Heavy Armor

1hander + shield OR 2handed weapon

Yes I know, rangers are "supposed" to run around in light armor, and yes I know, I won't do a lot of typical ranger running, but I just want a guy who is awesome at shooting AND can take a beating in close quarters :)

Anyone done this before and liked or totally disliked it?

I'm actually playing through now as a heavy archer. It's actually not bad. I put a few into one hand swords and have capped out archery and most of heavy. It's my first play through and I kind of accidentally ended up as a heavy archer but overall it's working. I'm a beast from range (took the 3x sneak bow skill) and can pull out a sword and shield and take on things up close. It may not be the most optimal but I'm enjoying it.

I wear dwarven armor and use my bow most of the time. When things get crowded, I get out my battle axe. Works for me!

I started as a sneaky archer, then picked up a full set of ebony armor along way. With sneak at 100 and most of the perks, plus a couple of buffs (gained in various non-spoiler-posting ways) I was able to sneak around quite well and wasn't encumbered by the heavy armor at all. Now I've stored that armor and am wearing full elven armor for something different.

All along, for when the fight gets in close, I've weilded sword and shield or dual daggars, depending on the situation. With a couple of well-timed destruction spells and/or shouts, I'm doing quite well.

I really don't see the appeal of Light Armor over Heavy Armor regarding Archery. Perks within the Heavy Armor tree allow for your armor to no longer hinder your movement, and you get the bonus perks of having stronger punching attacks (removing the need to invest perks into one/two-handed weapon trees), reduced falling damage, reduced stagger and greater overall protection.

The Light Armor tree does have 50% increased stamina regeneration, but when you consider that only sprinting and zooming in with a bow drains stamina, you quickly realize that it's not as vital a resource as one would first believe...

More a mumble to myself, for the 3 big things I'll use (heavy, archery, 2h):

Bosmer: +10 archery

Imperial: +5 Heavy Armor

Nord: +10 Two-Handed

Orc: +10 Heavy Armor, +5 Two-Handed

Redguard: +5 Archery

Taking away the just +5's, leaving me with:

Nord: +10 Two-Handed

Orc: +10 Heavy Armor, +5 Two-Handed

And here I'm in a meh-zone... don't want to hear "Kinsman" all the time, and can't see an Orc as Dragonborn :\

For the +5's: Bosmer is not my kind of race, Imperials are lame and been using Redguards enough for dualwield warriors...

Hrm.

Riiight, went with Nord, and I'm lvl 10 atm :)

Archery 36: (Faendal ftw)

Heavy Armor: 20

Two-Handed: 30

Smithing: 36 (had to make daggers to get to Dwarven)

Currently wearing some nice gear:

Steel Helmet (superior)

Amulet of Arkay (+10 health)

Dwarven Armor (exquisite)

Ironhand Gauntlets (+15% 2h dmg)

Imperial Boots (superior)

Ring of Minor Archery (+15% dmg)

Dwarven Battleaxe (exquisite)

Dwarven Bow (exquisite)

And I'm having a blast! :D
