Deathligger
(Skip this para to avoid rant. Or all of it, because it's all rant, come to think of it.) Of course the simplicity of running a game with mods on PC is not as simple as one might think. Oh no, you can't just load up the game and hope it starts straightaway; you've got to spend 2 hours trying to figure out what's changed, and try to remember what you did to get things working last time. I'm at my wits end; I have no idea how to get this working and I'm wondering if it's all worth it since I might get bored of playing the game after 10 minutes. It's been a year since I played, I start up Skyrim SKSE and the game file I try to load tells me there's content missing. I press continue and low-and-behold the game CTD during the loading screen. I fire up Nexus Mod Manager, see what's happening, and find a huge message that says something along the lines of, "hey, we know you just wanted to jump straight into your game, like you would normally, but we've decided to make you suffer and ask that you apply this update. Which means we're going to uninstall all of your mods which could take hours (it took about an hour, albeit much shorter if it wasn't for 'interesting npcs'), and then we will reinstall the mods." Part of me looked forward to this because it felt like a complete refresh, it'll surely work -- of course it didn't. Not to mention that during all this reinstall I had mods loading up asking me what options I want to pick. "Do you have this mod? If so click this." "Do you want it like this or like that?" Well how am I supposed to know? I haven't f****** played the game for a year. I don't remember what mods I've got installed or what is compatible with what. I thought you're supposed to figure that out or something. Jesus Christ. Then I remembered I need to open that 'BOSS' thing or whatever it was that sorted the load order. Only to find this has changed to 'LOOT' now, at least I think, so I've got to download something else now. Great. Perhaps even learn another damn program to get mods working again. At least it was surprisingly easy, you just load it up and it sorts the load order of the mods. At least that's what I think it does - I have no bloody clue if it's loaded in the correct order. It's been a year. I can't remember which mod loads where and whether it's before or after this or that. What another f****** effort this has been. I ran some sort of ID thing that's in the NMM, not that I know what that did - it appears it did nothing to make the game work. I've updated SKSE to the latest patch and everything else is up to date. I assume everything is in the correct load order but I dunno. Now I'm sorry if you sat through the entirety of this text and suffered my ranting, but this is very, very frustrating, when I all I wanna do is jump back into the game, even just for a bit. It reminds me of the time I spent in the past trying to get mods to be compatible with one another. There's so much hassle getting this s*** to work, I'm not even sure if it's worth it. If anyone has suggestions, preferably one that entails little work on my behalf, then it would be much appreciated.
Algabar
CTD on start usually indicates one or more missing master files. NMM should mark mods, that are missing a master, in orange in your "plugins" tab. As a first aid measure, you can try if your game loads with these mods disabled. Really solving your mod problem will take some time and effort though, I'm afraid. You will have to reinstall (or install) at least some mods. If you left-click a file, NMM will tell you, what master files are needed. Make sure these are installed correctly. If you need further help, please post your current load order and a list of mods without esm/esp that you might have installed. Otherwise it's just guessing what might be going on with your game... Deathligger
Sorry, I should have been clearer. The game loads find but when I click continue or load latest save file it goes to the loading screen and then CTD happens. I want to post an image on here but I can't figure it out. Thanks for the help.
Deathligger
I imagine my problems are because of all this TES5EDIT stuff? I'm considering to just install the special edition and start all over again with that... I'm sick of the work it involves to mod Skyrim. I think starting from fresh is probably the best plan. Especially if I want to play that Enderal mod I've heard so much about. I wonder if it's available for the special edition though? EDIT 2: Okay I've got it working! It was just a matter of ticking/unticking certain .esps. I stopped and actually read what each warning sign was giving me, and while I don't really understand any of the solutions it gave me, I just thought I'd turn off whatever it says it doesn't like or warns me won't work. The messages weren't red warning signs so originally I didn't think they were a problem. Plus I've played the save file before with the same load order so that threw me off as well. Bizarre, but at least it's working again. Thanks for the help! Edited December 19, 2016 by Deathligger
