Hats with Hair - body body slot to use?

Just trying to create some new hats, for a requested mod (Jackie Kennedy outfit) and I'm trying to recreate the flat round bowl/cap thingy that she often wore. It's usually sits relatively far back on the head, but I damned if I can figure out how to actually make a hat like that?

I used OS to modify a pre-existing hat (the baseball cap) because it had the simplest geometry to "flatten" but ...

I've tried using the "Headband" slot and the hat completely disappears.

Tried the Hair Top" slot but unfortunatly the character ends up looking like Friar Tuck (with a "Tonsure')

And finally I tried actually adding a full hair mesh (the "Parisian Bob" style = femalehair14) and reshaping/moving the hat into the desired location, which looks almost perfect, except ... it won't keep the hair colour selection, it simply defaults to "brown"

What am I doing wrong? if anything, and is there a "fix" or workaround?

Okay, thanks for that tip :0 I didn't alter the hair mesh at all, just used OS to combine them and save them, but maybe there is something that got screwed up.

For the moment, I've just resized the hat meshes so they sit pretty much the same as the vanilla beret, but that really dosn't look all that authentic for Jackie K's hat. (though it's decent enough for the Agent 99 hat.

I'm not sure though that forcing players to use a certain hair style when wearing the hat is the best option? I guess if you are wearing the outfit, the hat "should" look authentic, and that would include the hair style as well ... hmmm, dunno.
