ell46
I have played through the game before and joined the Imperials quite late in the game, which I had to abandon as the game became unplayable due to bugs or whatever. My problem at the moment is I've joined the Stormcloaks and now wondering if I follow this quest line through to the end, is it going to cause problems with quests I might already have in my journal or get in the future? Also I want to buy the house in Windhelm but old Ulfric won't even discuss it, he just keeps asking why I'm not off doing, whatever?
Dukkah
Not sure about the first part, but he offers the house to you eventually. I think at the same time as he offers you the position of Thane.
ell46
Thanks I'll keep plugging away at the other quests for that area, I think I have to complete 5
David Brasher
I had an opposite sort of problem. I wanted to play as a Stormcloak but I didn't want to play as the Dragonborn on this, my fourth character. So Ulfric sends me to Whiterun to deliver an axe. But the Jarl doesn't want to talk about axes, he wants to talk about dragons. So I get stuck going to Bleak Falls Barrow to help the jarl's rude pet wizard -- again. I never get to talk about the axe until I have killed a dragon, shown myself to be the Dragonborn, and become a thane. As soon as I become a thane, the jarl rejects the axe, and Ulfric declares war on Whiterun. I have to betray my new lord! I left Lydia at the palace, because I figured she was loyal to the jarl and not to the Stormcloaks. So when we attack Whiterun and finally fight our way into the palace, I have to fight against the Dunmer guard captain lady who helped me kill the dragon. I knock her down and feel bad about it. And Lydia does some bad roleplaying by drawing her weapon and attacking her jarl. Why is she so loyal to me? I just made her wait in the palace and never took her on a single adventure. So I am a bit annoyed that the main quest gets in the way of being a Stormcloak. Edited January 6, 2012 by David Brasher
abaris
So I am a bit annoyed that the main quest gets in the way of being a Stormcloak. That won't change until there's some serious modding. Also, don't expect too much from the NPCs. They're not the brightest tools in the shed. And it really doesn't seem to matter which side in the civil war you take. The game developers had the general approach of opening up the whole world to the player. Therefore your choices haven't got any impact.
ell46
I've been surfing and found out more about quests and my dilemma, at this point in time, It seems pretty safe to go ahead with the Stormcloak quests so I can get the house. In my previous game I got 2 minor quests from the thieves guild that were mucked up because of previous choices. Plant a stolen gem in Nepos's house after I'd killed everyone in there on a previous quest and to steal something from the house in Whiterun that was blocked off because of the battle there. I would have thought mistakes like this would have been picked up in the testing stage. The game became so unplayable and I still don't know how much of the problem was bugs, bad planning by someone and corrupted saves. On the subject of corrupted saves, I can honestly say that in about 35 years of playing D&D games I've never, ever, ever had a corrupted save, in any thing, so if part of my problem in the last game was corrupted saves I'm blaming the software or that damned steam rubbish. Dukkah
Oy, I can't believe they left something as obvious as not being able to complete a quest because of the battle damage in Whiterun in the game. That's... disappointing. I expect Beth to try harder than that. This is why you never sacrifice quality for snazzy looking release dates.
ell46
Perhaps if they hadn't spent so much time filling up every available space with clutter, they might have noticed those 2 problems. With luck I will be able to complete this game and see if there are any more botched quests. So far so good except for 1 bug.
Agnwristos
Dont ! I finished the Ulfric quests early and once I played the Dark brotherhood quests I had to deal with the absurd senario of A) An imperial son of a high commander of the Empire inspect several cities as to their defence ..B) after one assasination you hear weird comments like "The female cousin of the Emperor died in her own wedding, we would never let it happen here" by Stormcloaks.. C) I mean of course.. I am a Storm Blade yet the guards wont listen to me and will attempt to murder me for trying to assasinate someone they should be hating .. faifh
I played through the Imperial line and never had any quest-problems. Occasionally one of the thieves-guild auto-generated quests won't work. Well just reject that one and ask for a new one.
