How do YOU approach texturing and modelling?

I've gotten into retexturing armor and weapons in Skyrim recently and have made my own process to making simple retextures. I haven't approached modelling yet, though.

 

Something I usually do when I start retexturing something is think to myself how I want what I'm doing to look and find the best place to start. A lot of the time I find myself using the fuzzy select and free-draw select tools in GIMP to isolate parts of the texture. I use the fuzzy select tool when I want to create a ragged and torn and degraded look to whatever it is that I'm texturing. I also use the free-draw select tool change small parts of the texture without changing too much at a time.

 

So how do you guys approach and feel about texturing and modelling?
