False "save corruption" during gameplay

I've found myself leveling blacksmithing recently mostly through smelting just about everything I find.

I'd hate to try and make a run without Ars, and I had seen others mention they still get the issue without SkyUI 2.2. I was getting the issue also before installing SkyHUD so that shouldn't be a cause.

I just also got my SE install rock stable, the only issues I've encountered was having a bad skeleton mod that conflicted with some armor (seriously, why require HDT compatible skeleton when it doesn't even work in game yet?) or a bad CTD issue with more khajiits mod in Nightgate Inn, otherwise I had pretty much 1-2 CTDs in several DAYS where I couldn't repeat the issue. Considering I've missed the past week of work due to illness, I've had MANY hours into this game recently lol.

I could understand maybe some bad meshes causing some issue, but I highly seriously doubt bad textures would. If anything it may hinder framerate but the game itself shouldn't know the difference between a blue background and a purple missing one other than "this file exists" and "this doesn't." If you can tolerate purple hair and objects, you should find no stability decrease from it. At least I never did in my hours of testing different installs and install methods. I also run a few oldrim textures (mostly dungeons) and I have avoided said area before and still gotten this issue. I highly doubt it's textures, but I'm not a programmer, so I could be wrong.

UPDATE - seems that I can reliably get the issue to start happening simply by digging through my crafting menu.

All I did was hit a forge, start browsing through my possible equipment to be made, got down to jewelry (mind, there is a LOT of additions in my crafting section) and sure enough, not even making it to the very end, save corrupt.

Will test a few more times and see if I can narrow it down to specifics.

Sounds like it may be an issue with a large number of extra craft-ables overloading the system or something, maybe the game having to load so many assets is making it choke.

*edit* I ran through approx half of my crafting list, no issues. I checked my load states, still good, opened up and let it just sit at the crafting screen, still good. I cycled through all of my list very quickly and corrupt save. Resaver found 1 script and about 20 unattached instances that I cleaned. Total strings was right around 35K.

*edit 2* Takes some time, but running up and down my list of craft-ables gives me a consistent result, duplicable so far 100% when given enough time. Usually just going through my entire list once, and back tracking through a couple has been all it takes to replicate.

Interestingly enough, I cleaned scripts and strings with resaver and was able to duplicate the save corruption with LOWER strings and scripts overall than the original save.

Original cleaned/new corrupted save

Strings 35,082/35,079

Scripts 5,800/5,799

Script Instances 118,380/118,454

File size 7.08mb/6.87mb

I don't know what anyone can do with this info, but here it is.

*edit 3* I avoided all of the crafting stuff, but did end up adjusting a few followers with EFF, dismissing them, all of my followers then got naked and I recruited a couple back, adjusted their inventories and had them re-equip clothing, then got into some fights. Ended up getting spanked and witness the corruption then. So it may very well be directly not crafting related, but crafting and inventory management may help expedite the issue.

*edit 4* same issue again, avoided crafting stations, but did a large amount of looting and content transfers. Seems like it may be something with the inventory system as a whole.

UPDATE

That's what I'm taking from these issues as well. I have had all of the scripted mods installed before without them causing any issues, but when I installed a lot of armor / weapon / more loot mods, my game gets corrupted real quick.

Seeing that people are having issues both with and without SkyUI 2.2, I am not going to play without it, but I will try to drastically reduce the amount of loot and crafting options. Hopefully that will help a bit.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit 1 - I disabled a bunch of crafted armor and weapon mods as well as followers, wet and cold and other suspects. Then I ran though the usual testing route:

* Start out with LAL and spawn in the Dark Brotherhood

* Pick up the quests in there

* Run outside and head north towards Helgen

* Kill any bandits on the way and interact with the wenches and merchants along the road. Loot any flowers I find

* Get to the bandit camp that spawns 3 bandits when you loot the chest

* Kill them and head to Helgen.

Now, as before around 20-25 minutes the save is corrupt. Again. Without any crafting or looting more than 10-15 bandits + 1 chest.

This is random as all hell. I am starting to lose my mind. This kind of random crap without anything to go on is the worst. I wish Bethesda would share some knowledge on this issue.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit 2 - Enabled all mods again, and ran the same testing route. Just when I hit the bandit camp and killed the 3 bandits, the save corrupted.
* Savegame 4.12MB - 38431 strings - 5717 scripts - 69571 script instances - Corrupt at 18 minutes
Going to try the same route without OBIS.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit 3 - Did a run without any bandit mods (OBIS, OBIS Loot, Genesis, More Bandit Camps) and this time I made it through Helgen, grabbed Ralof in the cave, killed the bandits down the road, and headed into Embershard Mine.
Killed all the bandits and by the time I reached the end of the cave, the save got corrupted.
* Savegame 4.11MB - 38183 strings - 5715 scripts - 70067 script instances - Corrupt at 36 minutes
As many have pointed out earlier in this thread, it really does seem like this has nothing to do with what mods are installed, and more about string count. But my god is this annoying.

UPDATE

...I wish Bethesda would share some knowledge on this issue...

Unless someone can replicate this with no mods installed, I doubt they'd see it as a real issue. "Well one of your mods is causing it, our game is fine." Which is absolutely legitimate for them to be able to say that, if a mod really does break the game itself, it's not the games fault. I just have a feeling that it would take a ridiculously long amount of time to test this base game, to duplicate the issue.

*edit* I'm also getting save corruption at 33K strings though, at much less time put in (within 5 minutes if I peruse all of my crafting stuff) so while I DO definitely think that it's a great idea to keep strings low and stuff, for general performance and all, I don't think it may be directly related to the issue. At this point, it's sort of like saying "well yeah you need to exercise 30 minutes a day" and while you only do 28 minutes "that must be the issue!" but the bad cholesterol genes you inherited from your parents has more to say about that in the end.

I really don't know if that'll get my point across. lol.

If I remember correctly, I got a bug similar to this one on Oldrim. Once. It was fairly recently but I can't remember exactly what happened. I do recall the fake save corruption though, since I was confused for a second if I was actually playing SSE. Perhaps the bug exists in Oldrim, but simply would crash long before the bug was reached?

Also, I recently switched back to SSE, and after building a new modlist, I am running into the bug as soon as I start a new game. The initial autosave clocks in at just under 50,000 strings. Strange.

I find it frustrating that it's entirely possible (maybe not so much probable) that the issue may have lied within oldrim as well and one of the most basic mods may have accidentally corrected the issue unknowingly, and nobody just ever had the issue because. But in the move to SE, that particular 'fix' has yet to be implemented lol.

I think anything's just about possible now, different architecture for the base executable and everything, may have also just expedited the issue long underlying, and now it's only become a real problem further expedited by other things.

Also, picking through the strings in my save file with the bug I found that some strings say in the right hand info pane:

"The string could not be found in the savefile. This may mean that something has gone VERY WRONG."

Has anyone seen this before? Is it relevant?

I opened the save in ReSaver, clicked the + next to Strings, then clicked the + next to 0 and looked at a bunch of different strings. For example " factions." says something has gone wrong, as well as "**************". It's only on a few strings, so you might have to do some looking.

Well, I ended up looking through a corrupted save and I didn't find anything like that. It's possible I may have just missed something, but most all of my information gave me "could(not) be backtraced (to whatever.)"
