bben46
Ok, here is another thread on uninstalling when the normal uninstall doesn't work. This is from the Bethesda forums Unofficial technical FAQ by Tig ol Bitties I do not recommend editing your registry unless you know what you are doing. a mistake can make your computer unbootable. I cut that part of the post out. If this doesn't work, then we will go with the editing the registry route after we find you a program that backs it up first. 5.1 I'm getting error messages while trying to uninstall the game. With setup.dll error messages when attempting to uninstall the game, the most common solution is just to explore Oblivion DVD, and run setup.exe. However, even this doesn't work sometimes. Then you will have to manually delete Oblivion files, and Oblivion registry files. You can find all Oblivion files in C:/Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion and My Documents/My Games/Oblivion. An extensive uninstall guide provided by JDFan Make sure you are installing it on an Administrator account, not local user 1.) Copy any saved games that you want to keep to a new folder (create a new folder and copy or move C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves folder into it using Explorer) 2.) Copy and save any Mods that you want to keep (Or as a better alternative redownload the mods that you want to install - this will ensure that you get clean installs of them also including any updates since the last install) 3.) Set a system restore Point - To do this: Go to START - Help and support - Under "Pick a Task", select "Undo changes to your computer with SYSTEM RESTORE", then check create a restore point and follow the steps. (this is just in case something goes wrong you can restore your system to this point - should not be needed but better safe than sorry) ** Note for steps 4 through 9 if the file or folder is not there skip to the next step ** 4.) Go to Add/remove programs and uninstall Oblivion (If it shows on the list). If the add/remove procedure results in an error - skip to the next step and continue as it will still remove the game with the remaining steps. *****Cut part of post relating to editing registry.***** Tig here again...If for some odd reason this still doesn't work, then you can try a method I used to resort to: If deleting the stuff from the registry doesn't work or you're still getting uninstallation errors, one way that I used to get around it was to go into Safe Mode and run the setup.exe file from the disc. IIRC it asks you if you want to reinstall the game...so go ahead and reinstall it. Then after it's done, click on the Oblivion icon again and try the uninstall option and see if it works. Strange and tedious process, but it used to work for me every time. How to get into Safe Mode? Most surefire way: Start - type msconfig - hit Enter - click on the BOOT.INI tab - check the box for /SAFEBOOT - restart. To get back into Normal Boot, just go through the msconfig again and in the first window that pops up, just check "Normal Startup" and restart again.
