Im thinking of getting started in the whole 3d modeling and modding for something to do in my freetime. What im wondering is what tools i will need and an estamet on the cost. I have a decent rig so i should not need any hardware. i know i need photoshop but not sure witch one and i have no idea about 3d model programs.

A free alternative to Photoshop is GIMP, which in my opinion is just as good and easy to use.

For 3d modelling. Its very tough to jump right into, dont expect to be good for a while. Your main choices are 3ds Max or Blender. Blender is free, but you have to install some other things with it (also free, kind of a hassle). 3ds Max costs a couple thousand dollars. If you're a student enrolled in a course of 3d modelling or something youcan get the student version free (Saves like $2000!).

If you decide to go with Blender, I would reccomend looking up the tesnexus blender install pack and guide. It tells you how to install everything and such. You need to upgrade the nifscope version though, as the one in the pack doesnt support Skyrim.

since im just starting out with this ill prolly go with the free rout. i will check out GIMP, and for the modeling ill go with blender, if im going to drop 2k on something it shure as hell isnt going to be on software. I will prolly wait till the CK comes out before i try anything.
